Rem 5R 200yd Range Report (5-shot groups in post #36)

Thanks countyboy. I really can't take all the credit for the shooting - I used the same heavy front and rear sandbags for all these shots. As long as I put my crosshairs in the same place and don't pull, the shots tend to go in the same place :) We'll see how I do once I get a bipod and stop using the rear bag.

subneural, Using the bipod is a good idea but why would you stop using rear support.

While bench rest shooting is fun, I'm ultimately want to keep my hunting skills as sharp as possible. So I'll be moving on to prone shooting from a bipod - basically copying the style of shooting I'll be doing during deer and moose. I may also look at using taller monopods.

Hey Subneural, my 5R arrived today. Stock is much greener in person than in pictures. I like it quite a bit!

I will post pics later this week... Now to pick a scope. Still can't decide!

Then to decide on break in procedure.

I love all these quandaries to ponder!

Congrats countyboy! The 5R's are definitely a sharp-looking rifle. I don't quite understand the folks who decide to cover the unique matte-stainless finish with a layer of glossy duracote  Now git yerself a scope, and then see what she'll do!

Seriously, don't sweat the break-in procedure. I gave mine a good once-over cleaning with breakfree, including the bore. I didn't bother with the "shoot 1, clean, repeat" nonsense. I personally think over-cleaning does more damage than it prevents.

Please post up pics as soon as you get a chance (esp. once she's scoped!)

Well thanks for that! I've had a 5R, NIB and as yet unfired, hanging around for a year or so. I was wondering if I should sell it and build something else. You've renewed my interest.

Still have mine in the safe unfired... ( god, almost two years now ! )
Still don't know if I'm going to finish the build or not

Shooting a .308 VTR for now one in a while, but has a hunting rig.

I live somewhere between where you guys live. I would sincerely like to help you guys. If you need someone to take them to the range and test them out then I'm ready. Full range range report provided.

Let me know, I'm deadly serious. :) Can provide a pickup service.

If you are going to copy the style of shooting you'll be doing during hunting, try some positional shooting as well.

Very very nice, If you get the chance pick up some Hornady 168 BTHP 'match' or the Hornady 'tap' my 700P loves em and they are quite a bit cheaper than the gold medal, also If you ever get a chance find some portugese fmj ( surp ) great stuff :)

Hey... keep quiet on the Hornady bthp or you'll drive the price up!

Range Report #2. Decided to try a couple of 5-shot groups today at 200 yards. Still shooting Fed Gold Match 168gr. This is my best 200 yard grouping: 3/4-inch centre-to-centre, which is about 0.375 MOA. Point of aim was centre of the taget.

Groundskeeper Willie: If it wasn't against Gods' will, I'd marry it! 5R's rock.

You have a winner! Now, just get reloading so you don't have to pay the crazy prices for GMM ammo! The load's performance can be duplicated with Varget, 4895 or 4064, depending on what your rifle likes best.

My LTR shot better with 46gr Varget and the 168SMK than it did with GMM.

I just love the 5R, I took mine out this afternoon and shot a few groups with it, this was my best of the day. It's a 3 shot group.

The ammo is Lapua 185gr Scenars (factory load).

I'm working up some loads to test using Varget and 155gr Sierra's.

Which of the 10 loads do you think will shoot best, anybody care to take a guess?

P.S. don't forget to factor in my failing eyesight, shaky trigger finger and also I'll be shooting them offhand... lol. Just kidding. :slap:

45.5 of Varget pushing 155 gr palmas. Best load out to 1000 yds, quit wasting your time with little 3 shot groups...... min. 5 , 10 is better.

Then when they all fit in a 1/2 in. group it could be considered less than lucky or almost right, 3 shot groups tell you very little enless your only worried about being able to hit large beasts, then the target bullets are useless anyways.

I do the thumb tack test when I think I"ve got " thee" load, I put 4-5 of them up at 100 and when I can predictably point at one and hit it i've got the load I want.
