Live far far away from any gunsmith in Northern Canada so I end up doing most of my own work. I have been working with a Rem 600 (the original ribbed version) in 6mm. Pretty accurate gun and will make a great caribou rifle for my wife.
Two problems: 1) The bolt stop was missing and someone had jury rigged a bolt stop with a metal screw tapped through a new hole in the receiver. I filed a good slot in the screw so it is now removable and I gave the bore a good cleaning (It was very fouled).
I bought a bolt stop, bolt stop pin and spring made for a MOHAWK 600 and bought from Numerich. It was all they had as the parts for a 600 were out of stock. The bolt stop seems to be right (and appears the same as that used on my Rem 660's but the pin is too small (no friction) and the spring is too short. Western Gun Parts in canada won't sell me the parts as they say they are gun smith restricted.
Question: 1) Shouldn't the Rem 600 and Mohawk 600 parts be transferable? 2) If not where can I get a longer spring..is there a kit with lots of springs that might fit or be adapted to fit. I am assuming I can hammer the pin so that it will mushroom a bit and fit by friction. Hopefully I can adapt all this to work and the 600 and Mohawk 600 bolt stop is transferable.
Problem 2) The extractor in the bolt is sitting in loose as the rivet is broken. While the thing still functions it is obviously waiting to fail. I can buy a rivet and extractor from Western Gun Parts ...what is the trick to setting the rivet?
