I am looking for a relatively inexpensive rifle to get into precision shooting and this rifle is one i am strongly considering but i notice its not on the rem website. Is it discontinued?

I believe they're special production runs and aren't normally listed.

this, how ever the "special" runs of then still produce 1000s a year, IMO not listing them is a marketing gimmick to keep the :hype" that they are hard to come by... almost every Remington dealer has easy access to them if they are not in stock

Yup decent ammo and they are sub MOA out of the box.. Iv swapped my stock and had Guntech work my trigger down to 1.5lbs and with hand loads it shoots 1/2 MOA quite easily. Could probably tune my load more but 1/2 is just fine for my hunting and gong shooting needs

I used to own one and it was a solid 3/4 min rifle. Current owner is a buddy of mine and he reports that it is just as good now. I haven't hear of a bad R5 and recommend them as a good out of the box buy

700 P - 26" tube vs. 24 on R5 and slightly larger and 1/4" or so longer palm swell. Very good rifle. Rem SPS also viable if you are prepared to make upgrades down the road. Savage 10 in various iterations may well be recommended by others.

You can remove the "POS" stock and put on a Boyd's $145.00 to your door.Oh and I am quite sure you will be able to tune your loads quite nicely.

Don't have to spend 5K to have a shooter. What is more fun is having a budget rifle out shoot the high end ones.;)

These days I would agree. A few years ago though I suspect the barrels were run on the M24 tooling. They didn't have a 5R barrel other than the M24 stuff. In last couple years however they started offering regular 5R products such as that triangle barrel monstracity. So I suspect there is a commercial barrel run now.

This is just speculation.

The main benefits of the 5R are the fact you don't have to reload to get exceptional out of the box accuracy. Plus excellent loads are easy to find so you don't waste time.

I don't feel out gunned when shooting beside guys with their 3K plus custom rifles. It might not be as fancy but they look neat and more importantly they shoot well.

Shooter is the key word here... JP.

Thanks everyone for the replies it looks like there are many options out there for a pseudo custom build.

The bottom line is that i would like a rifle that i can practice with at 100/200 yards that is capable of at least moa accuracy. Im looking at a 308 caliber that i will handload and occasionally shoot at 300-1000 yards with the ORA (eventually). I read good reviews about the 5r so i thought that was a good starting point.
