Here's what I assembled years ago and finally have a chassis I like.

The problem with 700's is they don't make the appropriate bolthead for the PPC types. You're left with PT&G aftermarket bolts or modifying OEM bolts.
I've seen bolts with and M16, Sako and Mini 16 extractors. I made one up with a Sako long ago, but this tended to eject the shells high battering the scope windage knob. There's still lots of meat left in the bolt to mill in a standard M16 extractor and I've seen some older PPC benchrest guns with this mod. I still have that bolt and it worked better, but I wanted to try the Mini-16. Found another sacrificial bolt and milled in one of those. I prefer the original Rem 700 setup, but the Mini-16 is the best IMO for that boltface. Shells eject straight out.
Getting a 7.62 x39 round to feed properly out of BDL mag was another attempt at trial and error and never did work properly, but I used if for years in the BDL varmint stock.

Thanks to MDT they came out with the 6mmARC/6.5 Grendel 10 round mag. I was able to load nine 7.62x39 rounds and feed and eject perfectly.

This rifle is capable of putting ten rounds of surplus under 2 MOA. That barrel pictured is an older .308 Win varmint barrel I cut and rechambered and has over 4,000 rounds of 7.62x39 surplus through it when I shot the group pictured.
Now, I can switch install my 6.5 Creedmoor or .308 barreled actions in minutes.

Anyone with a Savage or Rem 783 can make this happen with proper bolthead. I have a 783 barrel and bolthead in 7.62x39 if you want to PM me.

Very cool build! I never give the 7.62X39 enough credit, I think of it purely as a high volume, high quantity round and not a slow deliberate precision round. It appears that when an ambitious guy has the knowledge and tools he can make anything shoot!

you obviously didn't get the memo that a 700 in x39 must be cerakoted red.

Shooting a Ruger American opened my eyes to what the cartridge can do. Wow.

Nice 10 shot group, with surplus ammo too boot. I’ve always found Romanian surplus to be good ammo.

Pretty dang consistent for military steel case...wish I still had some lol

Then again first time I see what it can do outside of an SKS

Good article.
I did mine in 2009.
Everything you see in that article I had fun with too, but with less info and options. Now you can buy a bolt or bolthead from PT&G. You don't need to invest in all the machine work.

Best load so far was with Sierra168 grs MK. I could seat the bullet way out.

That was the main intent. Fun to shoot and ring the gong all the way to 600 meters.

can I ask what kind of velocity you get with that bullet weight?
I've often pondered a project like this using a .308 barrel cut with a x39 chamber so i could load hunting rounds in the 140 to 150gr for a handy deer rifle with some irons and a tip off optic. Love the build OP, looks fantastic too.

I didn't do any chrono graphing back then and moved on to other projects later. I will do some more handloading with it and and setup the chrony.
First, I'm going to pull off the barrel and recrown it and add a PT&G bolt I want to try. I want to borescope that barrel and see what over 4,000 rds of steel jacketed rounds have done. I just recovered a bullet in the snow from firing it the other day and it still looks good.

I dig this kind of project and gave serious thought at one point to having a 700 built in x39.

But then I realized one of the main appeals for x39 (at the time) was the cheap cost of surplus.

Then I thought... well, if I did a bolt action in x39 there's no way I wouldn't want to reload for more accuracy.

Then I thought.... wait, I'm already doing that with say .308 and cost would more or less be the same for the x39 reloading and I get more range with .308.

So I ditched the idea.

None the less, I enjoy reading about those who make the effort and it really is a fun side of the sport to experiment. Really do think you have a cool build there.

I'm always looking for that perfect rifle and caliber for using in the treestand or ground hide when I'm hunting coastal blacktail and Sitka deer.
I use .303 brit with heavy bullets and prefer not to use .308 as it always produces more meat shock no matter what bullet I've tried in the 140 to 180 range.
Years ago Black Hills Ammunition produced 150gr x39russian factory hunting loads but they disappeared before the 2000's came around.
So I do ponder the idea of a rifle like this in a compact set up with a 140gr partition as I do have a niche use for it.
