I have a Remington 700 in 300 win mag with a sporter barrel. I use it for target shooting mainly and am playing with the idea of having a heavy barrel installed. My question is what kind of cost am I looking at to have a smith order and install a heavy barrel for me?

You should always have at least one more rifle ready. ;)

Heavy barrels are definitely nice when shooting strings. I have a 300WSM with a heavy 26 inch barrel. At least in the summer, I get tired before it does. Pig to carry though.

I guess I better have another rifle handy before I think about this. I won't be putting on a match grade barrel, just a 26 inch Remington factory heavy.
If your just putting on a heavy factory barrel in the same caliber or cartridge with a similar boltface it's just a matter of remove, install and headspace, maybe inlet your barrel channel in the stock. Shouldn't take a good smith that long to do.

Here's the rub, ordering a Rem factory barrel can only be done by a Remington Warranty smith sanctioned here in Canada. You'd be better off getting a custom barrel properly installed and have the action accurized as well. That way you have a certainty that accuracy will be top notch. You cannot count on a factory barrel performing well from Remington and you've spent your money either way.

New Gaillard barrels run around $350 and smithing can be anywhere from $150 and up to install. Then you need to find a smith with the reamer you want or get one yourself.

I called Tac-Ord in Ontario about spinning on a .308 Police barrel onto my M700 .25-06 action. He said they'd charge 200$ tops, seems reasonable enough.

What I would recommend...

You can order a Gaillard barrel and have him ship it to me for $375. (About 2 months delivery)
I would true your 700 action for $150.
I would fit, chamber ,etc for $225.
Bed and float $75 to $125 depending on the stock.
(about 1 week delivery after I have everything on hand)
shipping by mail back to you $30.

and you would have a great shooting rifle...
