I have been trying out this little device. It is a "mag xtender" for the Rem 700

It simply replaces the floorplate and increases the mag capacity from 4 to 7 (plus 1 in chamber) in 7.62 without being too obtrusive. It is designed for both 7.62 and 5.56 with a small spacer that is included. I think 5.56 capacity is 9+1.

It is made out of nylon resin and appears pretty sturdy. I imagine if you were to drop your rifle on a rock it might crack. (I keep my original floorplate in my field spares kit now, just in case) You use your original mag follower and spring. I thought the spring might not be strong enough but there is no problem and it feeds well. Even with the bolt open and only 1 or two rounds in the mag, I cannot jar them loose.

Best part is it is only about $20.00, compared with hundreds for the mag conversion kits.

They can be ordered from Brownells. I've got 2 of them right now and I like them. They work with the existing spring setup. Easy to install. Instructions are easy to follow and of course simple to return back to factory condition. They swing down and empty your existing mag just like a factory floorplate.

$ 18.00 at Brownells. Maybe I should bring a bunch in....

I installed one on a .222 for a customer. I think it holds about 10 in that size. It fed fine with the original spring.

The packaging states they are for short action (SA) in 7.62 and 5.56. I don't see any reason why they would not work for other calibers. The magazine box, spring and follower remain the same, the xtender just gives you a bit more room.

At only $20.00 ($15.50 usd plus shipping etc.) it would be worth a try. I ordered mine from Brownells.

Agreed, that an aluminum or steel version would be more robust (and priced accordingly) but I don't usually do any bayonet fighting with a scoped 14 lb Rem 700. :)

I already had a mag spring and follower in my field spares kit, so I just added the original floorplate that I had removed and a spare floorplate hinge pin (Brownells about $4.00 usd) and I'm good to go in case of loss/failure. I also added a 3/32 pin punch to my spares kit to complete the conversion/repair in the field. I shortened the pin punch shank to 1 inch to save space/weight.:rolleyes:
