A friend of mine is a machinist and does most of his own gunsmithing.

He has a Rem 700 in 308 that has had extractor problems over he years. He has decided that the time has come to install a Sako extractor.

He figures he could probably do a good job, on his first try, but the rifle is an important rifle to him and he does not want to take any chance on messing up the bolt head.

He would like to give it to a gunsmith that has done this may times before.

Suggestions?

An interesting point is the riveted standard size extractors seem to be unobtainable , so what are the options nowadays? I replaced a riveted extractor years ago on my 280 after 20k rounds but if it went again I'm not sure of what I could do.

The Remington 788 has a cheap riveted extractor that is very difficult these days to find replacement parts so a great alternative is to machine the bolt to accept a Sako style extractor. I have seen this done to several rifles and it's a great improvement over factory.

vam204,
The 788 riveted extractor is the same extractor as early 700 riveted extractors.

The biggest screw up that I've witnessed w/ SAKO extractor modifications in 700 bolt noses-

The machine work has a counter-bore for the SAKO extractor to pivot in.

Some in-experirnced machinist/'smiths drill a hole thru the bolt body instead of said counter-bore allowing witness to the firing pin....not good if/when a primer is blanked or case head separation.

Of the ten thousand + bolts that have been thru my hands, the catastrophic failures had SAKO extractor modifications done.
