I've decided that I need one more Remington 700, and I'm thinking of the new all-weather XCR in .375 H & H Magnum. Have any of you ever had troubles with the small clip extractor in the Rem 700 on factory ammo? I have heard of this clip extractor failing to extract stuck casings in terms of hot handloads, but not with factory ammo. I have two 700 BDL's and have never had a problem with them, and I shoot only factory ammo since I don't handload. All info welcome and appreciated!

This has been a common ailment with Remingtons in the recent past................easy fix though, as any decent gunsmith can install a Sako extractor to cure the problem.

Remington extractor

Remingtons extractors are as good as any of the others. A stuck case in any rifle can present some real problems for an extractor. When reloading follow the manuals and resize correctly. Take CARE Bill

Pritty much all the bolt rifles I own or have owned in the past have been 700s.

There is a bit of discussion here and there about the weak extractors, but I've never had a problem. Not once, and all fired with handloads!

The only gun I had extraction problems with was a Husqvarna. I finally found that it had a bit of very light rust in the chamber and even that famous claw extractor wouldn't pull em out.

I have a couple of dozen Remingtons, and I have no idea how many I have had in the past. In all that time, with factory ammo and handloads, in factory cartridges and wildcats, I have had two, count 'em, two, extractor failures. This is one of those things that folk who don't like Remingtons make a huge deal over, like "controlled round feeding". At the end of the day, it's a small thing and doesn't mean much. Get your Remington and enjoy it. - dan

Just exactly how common? I have never seen a Rem 700 w/extraction issues... I'm curious as to how you've had so many extraction issues with 700's. Thanks.

I've NEVER had a 700 extractor fail. I've seen at least TWO Sako extractor conversions fail catastrophically. In one case, the Sako extractor embedded itself into the shooter's cheek!

By milling the Remington bolt head, you are taking probably the BEST gas handling design ever divised and weakening it at least 50%. Have fun with that.

If modding the extractor was such a good idea, the Marine Scout Snipers would be doing it - they don't do it because of SAFETY concerns. That should tell you something...

AlbertaCowboy; I have owned approximately 125 Remington 700's since they were issued in 1962. I have had exactly 1 Failure in these units, and I suspect it was a flaw from the get-go, since the rifle had only about 12 rounds through it when the extractor broke. I have about 2 dozen of these rifles at present, and would never entertain the idea of installing a Sako extractor in any of them for the reasons already mentioned. I once acquired an older 721 with a Sako extractor, and I did not like it near as well as the factory system. Buy that Remington and don't let the naysayers bother you in the least. ditto on what EE said:D ....'cept I've only owned about half as many 700's as he has....:D :)...and I've had exactly ONE failure....but a blown case will do that to an extractor...
