Are the .243 and .7mm-08 cartridges based on the the .308 case? Which one would be a better action/barrel in a rem 700 to re-barrel or rebore to .358 win? Trying to decide on a semi-custom project.

so you have a .243 or 7-08 that you want to rebarrel (don't bother to try to rebore) to .358 win

either or it won't really be any different. Both are based on the 308 cartridge so bolt face will be no problem. Get a new barrel have it installed and chambered and your good to go.

but I'm not an expert

Remington short actions come in 2 boltfaces, 1 for 223 ec and 1 for 22-250 ,243,308 etc. A simple rebarrel job on a large boltface short action is what you need to do. As Woodchopper states to rebore is not really cost efficient.
If it were me I would use a long action so as to have room in the mag box for longer, heavy bullet use and still have room for them in the mag.

I've come to the conclusion that I should only buy long actions, that way if I ever get around to rebarreling them I can make them into anything I want.

Your looking at just a hair over 2.8" max. overall cartridge length for reliable magazine feeding out of the short action. If the 358 loads you want to shoot reccommend a OAL longer than that you may wish to consider the 3006 length action, or a different manufacturers short action like winchester.

As for purchasing a new rifle just for the action. Consider which throw away barrel is going to be easiest to sell.

Reboring is much less expensive than rebarrelling. It will also be just as accurate as a new barrel in a hunting rifle.

Ron Smith in Wimbourne, Alberta (403 -631-2405) is one of the finest barrel makers in the country and can rebore either a 243 or 7mm-08 for you. I have had several barrels rebored by him and they all shot as well or better than before they were rebored.

There are other barrel makers who rebore as well, however I don't have their contact numbers.

When you get it back you just put it back in the stock, go to the range and sight it in. No need re-bed or inlet the stock. Also you don't have to pay for having the barrel blued either. :)

So a .270 action would work better than a 7mm-08 for the .358 win?

If you are going to use a long action, you might as well to go to a 35 Whelen, which is a bit of improvemnt over the 358W.

Use the short actions for the short rounds like the 358, the parent case is the same as the 308, 7-08,243 etc. It defeats the purpose to go long, as others have stated might as well go to the 35 Whelen if you are going to the long action.
