For under 500$ the rifle appears reasonable, with a detachable magazine.
Does anybody have any experience with this rifle?

Could somebody suggest something else in the poor-man's detachable mag section? Calibers I am interested in are 243, 270, 308, 30-06.
Pretty much your standard fare.

I would be all over the Stevens 200 were it not for the internal magazine.

This rifle will mostly be used for long range pop can hunting.
Maybe a bit of deer.

I was at Lebaron and compared all of the synthetic detach mag rifles.... I liked the 700 sps dm teh best.... I threw on a Redfield revolution 3-9 x 50 and it only took me 14 shots to get 1/2" groups at 150 yards... today was opening day for deer here.... you can ask this fella what he thinks of my sps dm.... I bet he doesn't answer....

I have the exact rifle you mention in .308 with a bushnell 4200 Elite mounted on top. My best 5 round grouping are just under an inch at 100 yards and maybe around 3 inches at 200 yards (this is a guess, as I haven't measured beyond my eyes with the 200 yd ones, so take it with a grain of salt). This is done from the bench with factory Federal 150 grains with only a front rest and I'm not the best shooter. So basically I'm saying I don't think accuracy is an issue. Its light enough to hike around with, the stock is super durable and the action, while not butter smooth, is nice. I'm very happy with the purchase and am really glad I didn't cave and buy the $1400 browning white gold I was looking at.

I love the DM, it's really handy for hunting as you can just leave it charged in your pocket if you don't like lugging around a loaded rifle and don't need to cycle them out if you're unloading.

All in all, I like it. It came to around $800 with the glass and it's just plain fun to shoot. I've only had the trigger adjusted to 3.5 or 4.5 lbs or something, I can't remember but it's something like that and breaks well.

For what you want I can't really see not getting it. Just don't get the glass that the combos come with. You're better off just buying your own scope.

Hope this helps!

See, definitely the shooter, not the gun. I couldn't do 1/2" groups at 150 yards even if I walked 50 yards closer to the target. haha

I have one in 7mm-08, I knew I wouldn't like the plastic stock, and got a boyds stock for it before I bought it. I inletted the stock for the DM bottom metal, and bedded the recoil lug. I'm happy with it.

Other cheap DM options are Savage Axis and T/C Venture.

I was in the forces.... I shot 5 days a week for 12 years.... take heart bud.... everything is relative... as a now hunter I woudl be happy with 4 inch groups at 200... being able to review rifles is the only bonus for me....lol

I owned an SPS DM in 30-06. I had a Nikon Buckmaster 3-9x40 on it. It had it shooting 1.1" or less at 100 yards with my handloads. I liked that rifle, and I kind of regret selling it! But with the money from selling it [plus a little] I got a 30-06 in a Rem 700 Mtn LSS.

The SPS DM is s great rifle when found on sale. Under $500 brand new is a good deal.

Not knocking the Remington, but why haven't you looked at the Savage rifles with synthetic stock and detachable mag. They are under $500.

Assuming you ar ereferring to the edge or axxis.... the fit and finish is well below that of the 700 sps dm.... but they blow the rem 770 out of the water at the same price range... and the beauty is that you can get an axxis without the crappy scope.... so if OP wants to go cheaper they may be an option....

I have no experience with the Axis. That's not the gun I was thinking of. The 11 or 111 FCXP3 is a standard blued short or long action savage with plastic stock, detachable mag and a scope to throw in the garbage. This bargain workhorse is available for around $450.00.

yep.... the 11 series is a direct comparison.... I always get concerned when they throw in a scope..... I wish they wouldn't... make the decision easier.... again, what I always tell the OP is go to a local shop and see what fits best in this case... I have heard great things about the savage rifles in this class....

My next bolt action rifle will likely be a Remington, but will be heavily customized, and the purchase of the basic rifle will be to obtain a bolt and receiver that will be built up from there.

Then you should get something better than the dm... I am a huge rem guy and love the DM but if you are going to build off of the action then buy one that won't rust easy like the dm... as a hunting rifle i love 'em cuz i like shooting the sh!t and cleaning my guns constantly....

Another thumbs up here.

I get 1.5" groups at 100 yrds with factory 180gr Corelockts, and have had ZERO workmanship issues with the rifle. Good bang for the buck.

I think I made my mind up on the 7mm-08 in the SPS DM.
Now I gotta find one.:D

Who has replacement mags in greater than the standard 4 rounds.
Does the DM take standard 700 mags?
I take it that the 7mm-08 uses 308 mags?
