Hi everyone. I'm shopping, I like the 700 series rifle. I have noticed that the SPS is the cheapest of the 700. Is there anything wrong, ie lower quality, with this rifle verse the other rem 700? thanks RF
nothing wrong with it at all. Special Purpose Synthetic (SPS) just is the model in a vast selection of models of the 700. The stock is very cheap, however, at the end of the day the action is still a Remington 700 no different than all the other variations. As the factory adds upgrades the designation and dollars start flying. Many a custom rifle began with a low priced 700 just for the action.
The finish is cheaper, just keep it cleaned and oiled and it'll be fine. They seem to require a little more attention than traditional bluing...That said, for ~$85 more I'd get the SS version...
I put a takeoff CDL stock on a blued SPS, looks and shoots pretty good. I liked SPSs for $400 odd bucks a lot more than for 6 or 700. For $500, the Vanguard deserves a good look.
I should add that it shoots just fine too. Definitely sub-MOA and I haven't even finished working up a load for it. Maybe the stainless is put together a little better than the blued one, or maybe I just got a decent one.
i like the ss sps better than the blued. to me the ss ones look ok with a stock change the blued ones look cheap to me. shootablity of the ones i have owned are just fine. i don't think there as smooth as the older 700's but the bolt seems to wear in ok with some use. seems a little gritty. trigger is the same sps or 700 or model 7.
