I'm thinking of selling my stevens 200 to buy a remington 700 SPS... the main reason I want a rem700 is for the detachable magazine.

Do they have a SS version of the SPS (not BDL,XCR, ect...) w/detachable mag? I know there is the model SPS DM ... But the stainless version does't mention DM...

What if you bought the parkerized one and the stainless one, in the same cal, and just switched the barrel and action and sell the parkerized one with the floorplate :)

would that work? You'd have a plastic bottomed clip, but I think you can still get the stainless ones.

I'd be much more inclined to buying the SPS DM and send it off for nickel coating. all the advantages and look of stainless steel

I believe
brno284 on this forum does this kind of work but you'd have to contact him for more info. not sure how active he is on this forum though.

maybe PM 280_ackley and he could forward you his phone #

Detachable Mags...

Good gawd, who wants a detachable mag anyway? Just something else to get lost in the bush. The only detachable mag rifle I own is a Tikka 695 stainless synthetic 6.5x55mm and only because it came that way. :p

Well, okay there's the Rem 788 in 7mm-08 but they came that way, too.

I'd like a DM because we do alot of travelling on the quads with our rifles, getting on and off, reloading everytime can be a pain in the a**....

Is it the general consensus of my fellow CGNer's to like or dislike a DM? Are they a thing of the past, or a thing of the future? Having never owned one (DM), I would have thought they would be handy...

My stevens shoots great, I have no complaints.... except for that POS stock and recylced hockey puck recoil pad, I'm either selling it and going with a rem700 or i will have to order an aftermarket stock for my Stevens. I thought if I was going to upgrade to a Rem700 I might as well consider SS.... I luv SS

Personally, I don't like the DM and have no use for them on a hunting rifle. I have a few firearms with them though but only on one rifle - a 22. In your case, getting on and off a quad, it might be handy. I doubt that they are a thing of the past since so many people like them.

The idea that it's easy to lose a DM is pretty silly. Are you also going to lose your compass or knife or anything not tied onto your rifle??? I suppose if you are prone to losing your car keys and wallet or you can't find your car in parking lots, you should avoid rifles with a DM.

I personally would not own a rifle with a DM other than a rimfire

of the four hunting rifles I own, one of them is hinged floorplate and the other three are blind magazine ADL types, like your Stevens

I've got zero personal experience with the Stevens 200, but I did have a Savage 10 in 300saum a couple years ago for a short time. Seemed like a magazine system that works.

I don't mind a DM. I have yet to lose one in the bush, and I take a spare with me in case of malfunction.

I don't think a DM belongs on a "real" hunting rifle, but admit that for a pickup or quad rifle they make sense, so you can jam in a loaded mag and shoot real quick at that deer you just drove up on before it runs away. :D Whether that is called hunting is open to debate. I'm just prejudiced, and think that you load a real rifle by stuffing one round at a time into the top of the mag with the bolt open.

I guess a Heym, Steyr-Mannlicher, Sauer 90, Tikka T3 and the like are not real rifles.;) :D

Heym, yup.

S-M? Accurate, overengineered. Have had 3, managed to break the "indestructable" magazine on one very easily.

Sauer? Very pretty. Overengineered.

Tikka T-3? Plastic doesn't belong on a real rifle. I'll take a fiberglass stock in a second, but don't like PLASTIC. Accurate though!

All the above is my opinion, and offered somewhat tongue in cheek. Please take it as such.

Wanna see a "real" rifle? Compare that L61R you are flogging, or a Belgium Browning Safari external extractor mmodel, or a pre-64 M70...to a Tikka T-3. Enough said?

Yeah, I hear you. Not a shred of plastic on those! BTW, (here comes the hi-jack) how did you break the magazine on the S-M? It must have been the plastic rotary one, right? I have the Luxus model with the metal in-line magazine, which is better. Plus the stock is much stronger; I've seen two of the rotary mag version's with broken stocks - the wood is thin and the gap is large!
