I have a 700 ultramag donor action.
What would you build and why?
Looking to build something unusual, big caliber for hunting.
New 300 PRC?

For hunting at moderate ranges I'd do a 416 Remington, for long range it would be a toss up between 300prc and the 28 nosler. I like the 300prc for the same reason I like my 6 creedmoor, it was designed specifically for long sleek bullets seated long. There is always something about the 416 rigby I have always liked, and you would need a bigger bolt face for that so the 416 Remington is almost the same but not quite.

Well, I'd just build the 300 RUM. You can still get brass for it. Will the rest still have brass available in 20 years?

US military adopted the 300 PRC as there long range sniper round, not going away any time soon. The RUM is far more likely to fade in to oblivion, such a bad design.Bullet jammed down in the powder colum so far.Hard to find 300 Rum brass for it already.

Already have the rum family. So that’s why I’m looking elsewhere.
Only thing with the prc it seems the action needs to be modified for the box or even a mag.
I have a good gunsmith but will need to ask him if it’s easy to do on the milling. The tutorialof Mr Wyatt seems difficult for a unitiated.

Moose. But it’s more like for fun. Want to keep it «lightweight «# ( don’t want a mcMillan a5 type stock). Would like to have a dbm and hunter stock. Don’t mind about the recoil. I’m use to.

I was not aware the military has adopted the PRC. That is definitely the way to go then.

If you already have an ultra mag mag box it should be good to go. Remington uses a different mag box for the RUM than it does for say a 300 Winchester to accommodate the fatter case.

Couple of questions: Twist of barrel?
I will use HS precision dbm system with stock, will have an issue with reloads? I see that heavier bullet can be 3.7 + ... am I right?
