I was reading a book the other day that was published by SOF where they did reviews on a bunch of rifles and one of the articles was on the Chandler version of the M40A1 Sniper Rifle. It's basically an accurized Rem 700 on a McMillan General Purpose stock and a bunch of other tweaks.
The article held the rifle in very high praise and made mention of why...
The article states that the one piece clip slotted scope bases are silver soldered to the Rem 700 receiver. According to the article Chandler claims that this (unitizing) alone is responsible for an accuracy improvement of 1/4 MOA.
So I Googled chandler rifle and found this PDF that states "Unitized construction makes this the most rugged and robust scope mount available"

So anyway, I know there are a bunch of rem 700 guys out there who might want to give this some thought.
I've had my scope base come loose before - even with Loctite and I have used JB weld to glue my scope base on, but there's no way that would work as well as silver solder. Some of you may be familiar with some of my posts in the past where I point out the Rem 700 action is not as stiff as it should be (which I believe is true), but if silver soldering the one piece scope base is the solution, then hey, as far as I'm concerned, precision guys should jump all over it.
I don't think that you need to use a clip slotted scope base though. Once it's silver soldered, the clip slot wont mean anything. (It's just an M40 thing.)
This is a whole lot cheaper than jumping to a Surgeon, Defiant or others just to get that rigidity from a solid web of steel above the ejection port.
It does make practical sense.
