Rem 700 Varmint in .223 - Tell me what I need to know about those variables!

Title says it,

I became the proud new owner of a Remington 700 Varmint in .223 today

This is the first Remington 700 ive owned
This is the first small cal centrefire ive owned
This is the first heavy barreled rifle ive owned

What do i need to know? Whats a good price for ammo? What round should I use on wolves? Yotes? Ground hogs? Anything about this particular model I should know?
 
The twist of your barrel is most likely 1:12 so 55 gr bullets is about the max that you will be shooting. Anything from 45-55gr bullets should do the trick on yotes. Stick to the higher end for wolves. Anything will work on groundhogs. I would stay with a 55 grn round If I were you, as it will cover all your bases, that way you won't have to re-adjust the scope on every outing. You may quickly find that the heavy barrel is a b*#$h to carry around, so get yourself a good bipod and have fun. Small center-fire rifles are a joy to shoot so enjoy it.
 
55g remington core lokts PSP shoot the best of out my 700. They are deadly on yotes, but I have had a few runners with good shoulder shots. I'd try 55g soft points, 55g hornady Vmax. I usually pay around $20 for a box of 20.

you'll enjoy the .223, very fun to shoot. If that 700 is as accurate as mine is, you will have no problem hitting ground hogs 300+ yards.

the local Walmart had some .223 regular price $9. They were obviously sold out at that price but I thought that was pretty damn good. Not sure what the shell was, but hey, $9 for a box.....

I picked up a box of Remington Express 55g and some of that MFS stuff. Im getting a variety of varmint and soft point ammo when I pick the gun up as well.
 
I have had one for a couple of years now. Mine really likes the hornady v-max 50 gr. It also likes the 40 gr v-max loads. I tweeked mine and handload. The first thing I did was replace the tupperware stock with a Hogue Stock. Had to trim the stock with a dremel to ensure that it did not touch the barrel at any time.

Very, Very accurate and can smoke a gopher between the eyes at 150 yards every time.

Really scary actually.
 
Congrats on the new .223 :) My M700 ADL likes the plain old Winchester white box 45gr HP so well that whenever I find it on sale, I pick up a few more boxes (my loading bench has plenty of .223 components stacked up and gathering dust, lol) And the 45gr HP bullets work very well on coyotes from up close to waaay out there ;) The .223 is one of the most fun rifles to shoot that I own.
