Rem 700 XCR - Free Floated or not?

I'm in the process to accurize mine. It is chambered in 300 RUM. First thing I bedded the stock AND I free floated it .

Mine shoots a little bit better . Way less POI change on the 3th and 4th round when the barrel heat up. I haven't had the time to test fire more than 10 rounds.

While free floating it I had to sand down the bbl channel A LOT. because the stock is flexing too much.

All in all, the rifle shoot better but I can't tell you how much because I fired so a few rounds.

That stock flex so much when free floated that I ordered and received a Bell / Carlson medallist stock. I'm in the process to make it all fit.

I'll let you know how it is turning.

Run a piece of paper, like a $5 bill, under the barrel up towards the receiver. It if stops or sticks before you get to the chamber area, it's not floated. The chamber area should be supported by the stock.
Floating a barrel is easy. Just sand the barrel channel where it touches the barrel to relieve that area. However, not all rifles like being floated. The only way to find out if your's does, is to do it after shooting the rifle off a bench. If you don't shoot it first, you'll have no way of knowing if the groups are improved or not.

"...some sporter-barreled remingtons shoot WORSE after..." Yep. Fortunately, putting the pressure point back in is easy too. Put a bit of bedding material an inch or two aft of the end of the forestock. Don't forget the release agent.

My Vanguards were not free floated and one of them was shooting 1/2 in 5 shot groups.... so if it shoots fine, I would not change it.

I have one in 30/06
Shoot reloads 2" @100m(5 shots)
Took off the stock, drilled larger action holes and put some stainless pillars and now it's shooting 1" with same reloads. The barrel is not free floated.
Try it...
