Hey all

I'm looking to get into some long range shooting and I was thinking that Rem 700P would be a nice rifle to start. How are those rifles out of the box? I know they will need trigger work and bedding. What is a good place to get that work done. Also what is a good scope mount to get? I will be using Bushnell 3200 Elite 10x fixed scope. Same goes for the bipod.
Off its for .308 remmy:)

Thanks in advance

Paul

How would you "know" this?
'Cause some guy on the internet said so?:D
Dude... 'Rifle is fine outta the box. I've never done a trigger job or bedding on my 700PSS and it shoots fine.
Honestly I think all these folks who insist on trigger jobs and bedding for new rifles think they can just buy good scores and tight groups.
How's this for advice to use with a new rifle.... Practice.

Thanks for the info. I guess you'r totally right about how I heard the rifle needs those things. Back on track what should I look for a scope mount and bipod.

Spend the bucks and buy one you will not be disapointed! The "V" block system of bedding that comes with the HS Precision stock is good. Can be bedded if the need be but shot it first. Triggers on the other hand leave some to be desired lots exceed 7 pounds of pull. Quick adjustment will get you into a useable 2#s.
The 308s are throated rather long OAL but seat the bullets to the max that your mag will take. The accuracy with factory match will be into 1 MOA to 3/4MOA. Handloads will be under 3/4 MOA to 1/2 MOA with the right stuff !
I've got two of them, one in 308 and 223 [1-9 twist] and pleased as all get out with them.

If your looking for a great {inexpensive} 25 MOA tactical base try the "EGW" base. wwwegw-guns.com
They are eager to please and very quick to ship!

Shoot It first then see.........I am shooting 55 grain fmj Rem/UMC 223 and am getting 3/4 at 100 yards........If it aint broke dont fix it !?!?!?!??!?!

Get a set of Burris Signature rings with inserts and a set of offset inserts. Your 10x, 3200 will give you enough elevation to get you from 100-1000 yards.

Frivolous U.S. law suits and the cost of doing it(it's hand work) have caused manufacturers to sell their firearms with poor triggers. Every new firearm needs trigger work. Some more than others. Two pounds is too light for most rifles though.
Bedding is another thing altogether. A new rifle may or may not benefit from a bedding job. Most rifles will benefit, but shoot the rifle first with good ammo. Same goes for free floating the barrel. Some rifles don't shoot well with one, some do. The only way to find out is to float the barrel and shoot the rifle. Again with good ammo. If it doesn't shoot well with a floated barrel, it's no big deal to put in a pressure point using epoxy bedding material.
All that being said, spending a pile of money on trigger work and bedding will mean squat if you then use mediocre ammo. For long range target shooting match grade bullets, carefully loaded, are essential. If you're not reloading, you'll have to try a box of as many brands of factory as you can to find the brand and bullet weight your rifle shoots best. There is no guarantee that factory loaded match grade ammo will shoot well in your rifle either. Milsurp is out of the question.

Stock trigger, not floated, not bedded. From a bench, at 7degrees celsius. Bipod and rear bag

Yeah that's right, .299 and .45something with 19$/box ammo, unbedded and trigger still at 7+lbs

What kind of scop/mount combo are you using?

I'm using a Burris XTR 3-12x50 mildot, with 30mm tube. My base is a Warne tactical picatinny rail and my rings are TPS aluminum rings. Very sturdy combination. And the rings do not leave ring marks at all and i havent even lapped them, i recommend TPS rings VERY strongly.
