Is there any difference between these two rifles?

I ask because I am about to buy a Remington 700P but have come across a 700PSS with 400 rounds through it going very cheap.

Yep just spoke to the seller and I will pick up the 700 PSS. The saving on the rifle price alone will pay for a scope, and it comes with a bipod and GOOD rings.

i don't think there are the same....

the PSS came it a heavy duty case with optics, bipod, all the good stuff from there custom shop...

Jaime, I think you are talking about the "TWS" (Tactical Weapon System) it comes with the Leupold scope and base/rings, Harris bipod, nylon sling, Pelican hard case and Remington cleaning equipment. What I was told by Greg Foster of Remiongton was the PSS meant "police sharp shooter" and that was at a time when the US was feeling all warm and fuzzy with Demacrats in power, so Remington buckled under and changed the designation to 700P and the P stands for "Parkerized" that made it the same rifle with a cool designation in 700P but in reality was politically correct. I think the only real differance you will find with some of the early 700PSS/P rifle was that they had 24" barrels as opposed ot the new ones with 26" barrels.

A few years back, I saw one of the original style 700PSS rifles from the late 80's for sale at the Buffalo gun Centre. It had the wood stock and the original Leupold scope and everything, it was from the Maine State Police SWAT team and they were asking $5000 for it. I would love to have it as a collector gun.

The Remington 700 PSS is a precision rifle made by Remington Arms. It is a variant of the Remington 700. The PSS stands for Police Sniper Special. It was chambered for .308 Winchester cartridge as well as the .223 Remington, .243 Winchester, 7mm Remington Magnum, .300 Winchester Magnum, and .300 Remington Ultra Magnum. The PSS is much heavier than the standard 700 and has a much thicker barrel for increased accuracy and reduced felt recoil. These attributes make it a prime choice for police SWAT team snipers. The 700 PSS has a 26" barrel, aluminum block bedded in its stock. The barrel and stock are made by HS Precision. Remington has recently changed the name of this rifle to the 700 Police or 700p.

Jamie: Yeah Steve's right, the TWS was the custom-shop set-up with the Pelican case and VX-III scope. The PSS was re-designated as the "police" rifle because "Police Sniper System" or "Police Sniper Special" (whatever the heck it was, I've heard 3 different things) was too politically incorrect.

And if you ever get a chance to talk with Greg Foster, the guy who is incharge of the LE/Miltary Division, he will tell you the P in 700P stands for Parkerized. Politics! The TWS is not custom at all, it is a box 700P with all the goodies. They now have a 700LTR TWS as well s the 700P TWS.

700PSS never made it in 243win, I wish it does, but it never, only the rem700VS had it in 243win...

And the only difference between the 700P/PSS & the 700VS is the stock (both H-S Precision)............................The 700VS is the better buy as it is cheaper...................;)

SKBY.
