Rem 700SPS-Varmint review :)

Thanks, pilgrim...I've been waiting for them to post this! The tester doesn't seem that impressed with a $500(us) gun that shoots .75MOA...that sounds pretty damn good to me!

I wonder about the statement that the barrel isn't freefloated...I know I've seen at least one person say that their barrel was. I wonder if that was a fluke, or he got a bad one?

I also wonder how much bedding the action would improve the accuracy. Changing the stock was worth about .25MOA...is that too much to be expected from a bedding job? It would certainly be cheaper.

the SPS-V stock doesn`t float the barrel...I checked it 2 days ago in the store, on my SPS-V...
I already bought the HS stock to change the original stock on the SPS-V....

Yuri, just depends on how much wiggle there is in the orig stock. I assume quite a lot like all modern tupperwear stocks.

Bedding and freefloating would be good for 1/4 MOA, maybe a bit more. However, that all depends on how good/bad the barrel is and the ammo/handload shot.

Jerry,

PS See no Savage is better then Rem talk. I can be impartial.... well sometimes.

I'm looking into getting a "budget" rifle to get started in some long range shooting, so the Savage 12F, Rem SPS Varmint...and the SPS Tactical if it becomes available in time...are in the running. I don't mind the cheap stocks as long as the gun shoots well, and I'd rather save some money and bed the action than have to buy a new stock right out of the gate.

Here's hoping that the Remington engineers design a tighter twist bbl like say a 1 in 8" twist into this potential winner. I quite prefer that 9" twist that came on my wife's M700Police in a .223....

Picked up a SPS Varmit in 223 locally in Whitehorse today.. Tickled with the price I paid. The stock sure leaves something to be desired in the looks department. If they shoot the way the other Rem SPS I'll be satisfied. Will have a range report provided the wind gods coperate and the temp. is above -20c.
Adjusted the new model trigger (MK10) that comes from the factory. Its a completely redesigned trigger which actually works half decent right out of the box. Little creep, some overtravel and about 5# pull.
Good news is the new trigger is very adjustable down to 2#, the adjustment screws are retained with what appears to be a crazy glue of sorts that is easily defeated with some heat. The adjustments are the same as the old trigger, rear screw for sear engagement , lower front screw pull weight, upper front for overtravel. By the way the twist is 1-12" .

Checked with Wholesale Sports & still no SPS Varmint in stock...

how comes??? I picked it up on Friday....and they still had one in .308 and whole bunch of others.... don`t understand....or...it depends on who you have talked to ;)

first impression??? new trigger has 3 screws for tunning....
I tunned my trigger to 2 pounds....sweet :) I like it...
like finishing....much courser than on 700P, but I like it more...will switch original stock to HS Precision PSS, original is too soft....
in general - VERY GOOD/EXCELLENT for 550 :)
