Rem 722 feeding issues.

Hey ya’ll!

Got a 722 in 222, I have it in a McMillan ADL stock with internal mag. The problem it has is it has an issue feeding rounds from the right side of the magazine. Only way I can get it to feed reliable is if I only load it with 3 rounds. Loaded with the three rounds it has two rounds on the left side, the first and last round and it will feed the 2nd round which is on the right. If I load it fully, which is 5 rounds, it will load the fifth round, and the next round will pop out of the mag as I push the bolt forward and either the bullet end of the round gets jammed up or is sticking out of the action like a stove pipe.

If I only have three rounds loaded, it seems the round on the right will feed. The follower seems to be tipping upwards at the front of the mag.

Things I’ve tried are: original box mag and spring and follower, reversing ends of the spring with the follower.

Rem 700 bdl box mag and spring and follower, also reversed spring ends with follower with that one too.

I do not want to mess with the feed rails. Seems the follower tipping up might be the culprit.

Any help is appreciated.

Had a similar issue but different firearm. Solution was a stronger/new follower spring. Might be worth a shot if you have a newer 700 spring to try.

what happens when you have 4 rounds in the magazine? it would seem that it has to do with the available depth of the internal magazine and the spring set up. the inlet could be a bit different as compared to the original wood stock that this rifle would of had. Is it the right follower on the spring? could have been swapped out and that is the difference in the internal capacity. how often are you rapid firing 5 rounds where loading 3 won't suffice?

I am thinking about getting another spring to try. I have tried two so far with the same result. But for the cost of one spring, it might be worth it.

When I load four rounds, the first round to feed is on the right side of the staggered column of rounds. And it fails to feed every time. It’s almost as if it prematurely strips out of the mag before the tip of the round has started to make its way into the chamber.

And I have almost conceded to only being able to load three rounds. For coyote hunting three is definitely enough. That being said, I would like to have the rifle function as it should with a reasonable amount of effort or money.

your rifle might have the wrong follower in it. might be a follower for a 243 or 308 which might explain why if 4 rounds it isn't being held under the feed rail to feed. So the shape and thickness of the follower could impact the ability to have 5 rounds in the rifle. google Numrich gun parts for the 722. they have pictures of both magazine followers to see if your rifle has the correct one in it before you go out and buy more parts.

I am certain I have the right size follower because the box mag has the additional metal in it to reduce the size of the mag to 222/223 size. I even put a 308/243 mag box and follower in there to see what it does. It won’t hold the rounds in the mag when you’re loading them.
I think I will make a Numrich’s order though for a new follower and spring and see if that makes a difference.

I am certain I have the right follower because I have the original 722 box mag and follower that has the limiter box in the box mag to only allow 222/223 length rounds in the mag. It holds the fourth round, it isn’t until the bolt starts to push the round forward and it gets just about to where the tip of the round should be going into the chamber then it seems as if the front of the follower tips the round up and causes the round to pop out. I purchased a 700 223 BDL bottom metal off of the ee to try and have used the spring/follower/box mag as well. I did try a 308/243 size follower and box mag and it won’t hold the rounds in the mag at all.
I think I will have to put an order in at Numrichs for some new parts and see. Otherwise it will just be a 3 shot rifle.
