The 742 has many(too many)locking lugs ,and in smaller calibers like the .243Win are just fine!
But when you put higher pressures on it the fine locking lugs can get(like a garbage disposal)very sharp and dig into the reciever and carrier!
They were and still are a good system for a low power round(but the life expectancy is short) if one fires it too often!!
You could own one a lifetime and not wear it out,if you only hunted with it!!
The 7400 addresed the problem with four locking lugs!
I have one in 243Win and I like it!
So it gets a bad rap in the higher cals!
Look inside it and judge it yourself,about 250.00 to 275.00 is what a good one(seldom shot)just hunting seasons brings around here!
