Remington 742 .308 cal.

I completely dissaembled the rifle and removed the firing pin as this rifle will now be used to teach PAL courses with.

Once I reassembled and lubricated the complete rifle it cycles fine by pulling the bolt. When I put a round in the chamber its almost impossible to pull the bolt back again. If I give the bolt a couple taps with a hammer I can pull the bolt back and it will eject the round.

I gave the chamber an extra cleaning and the problem still there.

Any ideas what the problem is?

Are you using a fired brass casing? If so, was the casing fired from this rifle? Not all chambers are the same size, so if you are chambering a casing that was fired from a different rifle it can be difficult to both chamber and extract it.

Ive never actually fired the rifle. Its a reloaded round. I took the barrel off and the round dropped freely into the chamber after i recleaned it. The problem only seems to occur when its loaded thru the normal cycling process.

Any marks on the casing, like from the neck being tight or the casing rubbing on the chamber

Try it with a factory round.

"paint" the round with a black sharpie permanent marker and cycle it thru the action. Check for bare brass spots on the round to see if the is causing the problem.

Definitely try a small base die reloaded brass for this.
Another thing to try is remove the barrel and hone the chamber with a tight fitting brush, 0000 steel wool and light oil. Remove the oil once done. Notorious rifles for dirty, rusted chambers.
