Rem 7600 .35 Whelen mag issues?

A good buddy of mine recently picked up a mint (new in box, but very old stock) Remington 7600 in .35 Whelen. The rifle is in amazing shape. Bright blueing, crisp checkering, smooth pump action.

We had it out to the range, and and it performed well, but ran into one small problem. The mag would only feed the first round when the mag was full. Rounds 2, 3, and 4 would jamb everytime, always in a bolt-over-base way. Ammo was Remington PSP 200gr and fed fine when the mag was full or by single loading into the open ejection port.

The mag looks fine, no obvious problem to the feed lips or crud in the body. Maybe the follower spring has gone?

Is this a common problem for 7600's in general or .35 Whelen in particular?

If its a common problem, where is there a good source of replacement mags?

Sometimes if the mag is dropped on the ground, one of the lips gets pushed in. this would not allow the shell to come up enough to be caught by the bolt face. Try bending the lips up a little bit. I've had this happen with an old 35 rem and a 308. If the shell isn't up enough to be caught that is what happens.
 
SOunds like the mag wasnt seated all the way up... Its common for the mag to go in one click, but not two. Were you loading the mag with 5 shells or 4? this will cause this every time as the mag wont go all the way into the lock position, but will stay in place, and fail to strip a second round. My dad had the same thing happen years ago with a 760, and a big deer running toward him.
They started calling my dad "singleshot" after that :)
 
As DarrylDB says make sure the mag is seated properly.Any of the 7600 35 Whelens I've owned fed fine.I did have a 7600 in 30-06 that would jam on a regular basis.The mag that came with the gun was difficult to seat and I just replaced it with a new one and that seemed to cure the problem. Bac4
 
I'd try a new or different mag, and go from there. Even if your mag is new, it may be flawed.

That could have been the problem. It was a four round mag, loaded full, so maybe it wasn't seated properly, or maybe its junk. Since he needs a second mag anyway, I'll have him pick up a new one and we'll try them side by side.

Red herring alert......kind of. ;)

Does the mag have rubber on the bottom of it?

If yes, try a mag without the rubber. If no, try a mag with the rubber.

The newest 7600s have a mag with a rubber bumper on the bottom. They are NOT interchangeable with the older rubber-less mags. If the gun has been sitting in a store for a while, it is not impossible that somebody switched mags at some point.

I say this is a red herring, but being a betting man I will say likelihood 1 is as Darryl guesses (mag not properly seated), likelihood 2 is iceman2's hypothesis about a bent mag lip (although that should also cause a jam on first round feeding) and this is a distant but possible third.

Now that you have my curiosity up, will you please do us the favour of reporting back and let us know what happened? I just got a 7600 in .35 Whelen delivered today, and so my curiosity is more than academic...:p

I bought a 7600 in .35 Whelen a few years ago, and the mag that came with it never worked properly. It wouldn't seat firmly in the rifle, and a second shot would seldomly feed. Luckily I have several 760 clips in 30-06, and they work perfectly.

That post about the newer clips may be a red herring. Last summer I bought a new 750 in .35 Whelen which uses a newer type clip. This gun was a jammer as well, and I finally had to return it. While at the range, I tried one of my 760 30-06 clips in the 750, and instead of a single shot, it became a two shooter.:evil:
 
I don't think the 7600 in 35Whelen is new enough to have come with the bumper mag.

I have two mags here marked "35 Whelen" (only) and they are the old style w/o bumper, but I usually use a 30/06 mag in mine. It came with the gun and feeds great.

Yup, have to agree here... Just had my boss' 7600 out to the range this weekend. He has one mag marked "35 Whelen" and the other "30-06". I compared them visually side by side and they appeared to be exactly the same. Shot more than a few rounds out of both and didn't detect any noticeable differences in feeding or function...
