Just looking for discussion.... this past weekend, a buddy lucked into a really decent shape Rem 788 in .308 Win for $399 + tax on consignment at a local shop.

Rifle looks all original, including great bore of 22" factory barrel with original iron sights installed. Stock is super clean with only a couple bumps. Has swivel studs installed. It's drilled & tapped for scope mounts but doesn't include any mounts. One factory mag, .308 Win marked.

Barreled action could do with a good going over with some G96 and fine steel wool just to clean it up.

So, all in, with tax would be $448.

Good deal?

Sounds like a good deal to me. Not amazing deal, but he certainly didn't get robbed either. I want to say I typically see them in the $500-600 range.

$448 doesn't get you a Savage Axis these days, so I think he did alright.

Saw one at a local gun show a month ago. 750.00. Mind you it had some sort of scope on it. I just looked at the tag and walked away. ...catnip

Some of us still remember the $399 Stevens 200’s with Flame Stocks.. gawd I wish deals like that would or still existed in todays world.
Are you mis-remembering the Vanguards that Wholesale Sports had for super cheap? Or did Savage do a run of Stevens 200s in flame stocks too!? (The 200 was before my time as a gun owner... My savage Axis XP cost only $235 ~8 years ago though...)

Maybe it was the Vanguards.. after living my half my life in house full of estrogen, my mind may not be a sharp as it once was.. at least that’s the excuse that’s currently working for me 🤣

My cheap 783 .308 was machined worse than old norinco guns, cuz after a few shots the ejector quit working. I had to take the bolt apart to polish it to make it work. But it's very accurate. Took a whitetail uphill over 300 yards, dropped one elk and two moose right on spot.

My buddy and I bought 6 of them at $299 ea. + tax.

My father paid $199 back in the day for his 788 in 243 with Tasco scope from Sears. I sold it for him for $350, about 15 years ago. His was pretty much mint.

Is sort of curious - I started to work in a Potash mine as an untrained Underground Labourer - no skills, except willing to work underground - $5/hr in Fall of 1975. Over the years, I paid off a 12% mortgage on our first home, and then two other mortgages, in succession - a different home, each time. When I retired in 2014, I was making circa 15 times as much as when I started in Potash Mining. I think newbies today, at the mine, start north of 4 or 5 times where I did. Dollars do not matter - exchange rates have varied wildly over those years - but owning "stuff" counts. If it got sold, you no longer own it - whatever dollars you bought it for, or sold it for, was just an illusion.

$400 for a 788 in decent condition is reasonable at todays prices, I have seen them asking up to $750 at gun shows. Back in the day I believe they sold for less than $200 brand new but that was back in the 70s. Still remember seeing them in the old SIR catalogue for that price.

Bought my first Remington Model 788 in 6mm Remington, 1980. I paid $189.99 at a hardware/sport shop combined.

Nowadays a mint 788 can go for $750.00-$900.00. I know it seems a little high but that's what people are asking.

The Remington 788 was and is an extremely accurate rifle. Had one in a 222 Remington and a 22-250 as well, all would shoot 1/2" groups at 100 yards.

I think $500.00-$600.00 for a nice specimen is more realistic for the 788. Gun prices are slowly coming down just like UTV's, ATV's RV's, Boat's, snowmobile's, trailers and even used vehicles. The covid 19 scam is over and the market is flooded with ton's of inventory. Firearms included.

I have 4 788's. They are all MOA or better.
$450 bucks is an excellent price. Unlike the plastic stuff today they will only grow in value.
Good score. Don't try to redo the stock if it's hardwood. They are nearly impossible to refinish well.
If it's walnut, tru-oil after stain removal does a great job
