As many of you know, 870 barrels for the most part are interchangeable between 2 3/4" and 3" receivers. What would the effect be of shooting a 3" shell in a barrel capable of it, off a 2 3/4" receiver?

Am I correct in thinking that ejection would be the only issue?

i was just told in a thread of mine that it would have a shorter ejector if its not a mag receiver and you would have probs with ejection . ... see "M is for magnam?" thread in black and green shot guns section . :D

Hi: They have discussed what is required to convert a few times in the gunsmithing section. Check there and you will get the right answers.
Receiver is the same as far as I remember but ejector has to be changed for sure and I cannot remember what else. take care

Im not interested in conversion. Just more of theoretical situation.

the receiver will handle the pressure, no issue. If the barrel is chambered in 3", it'll load and fire. The problems starts on the extraction. When the action is fully out of battery, the ejectors will not pull the empty hull past the ejection port. The expanded crimp make it too long. I have been toying with the idea of getting mine modified, but have not yet done so.
