Here's some info for your consideration:
The following serial number information is for Remingtion firearms manufactured after 1921
Remingtons manufactured after 1921 have a code located on the left side of the barrel near the frame that identifies the year and month of manufacture.
1. Codes started in 1921 using M
2. A 22 letter alphabet was used until 1975, excluded I. O, Q, V
3. When M came around again in 1943 they started using double letters MM
4. When they got to ZZ in 1953 they went back to single letters, A = 1954
5. In 1975 at Z they decided to start using the missing letters I, O, Q, V
6. 1976-1979 are I, O, Q, V
7. 1980 starts with a full alphabet in order.
9. After Aug 1999 they only stamp the date code on the box
