Can you take an older 870 with a 2 3/4" barrel and put a newer barrel with a 3" chamber on and fire normally? This discussion came up,and one of the points made was that the ejection port was too short. I measured one we have at work(a newer one),it measured 3".
Thanks all

If the 870 serial # ends in an "M" then it is a magnum receiver and will work with the 3" barrel. If not the ejector will have to be replaced with a 3" ejector. That is the only difference in the receivers the ejector comes in two types 2 3/4" and 3" any gunsmith can change the ejector for you.

You have to remember that after you fire a 2 3/4'' shell that it's going to be longer than that when the empty shell is ejected from the gun, so the ejection port has to be longer than 2 3/4'' to get the empty to eject properly out of the gun.

Receiver geometry regarding the ejection port is the same on both magnum and non-magnum 870's.

No. 2 3/4 length reffers to length after firing. If you measure an unfired shell it measures less.

With the exception of a few target guns, all 870's are made with a 3" chamber now, except for the Supermag which comes in 3.5".

As well, would it not be more cost effective for Remington to manufacture one size reciever only?
