I have a chance to hunt a shotgun only area this fall but I don't own a slug gun....never even owned a shotgun. Anyway, Remington's slug gun looks good and it's got open sights so I don't have to scope it.

It's a $400 dedicated slug gun (I don't think you can swap barrels on it). Any owners? Opinions?

Thanks!

Hey - my dad took a 200 lb 8 pointer in the shotgun shoot last year with his Rem 870 in 20 Ga at 25 yards - never failed yet! Great gun and YES you CAN swap out the barrel for an upland or duck gun. I think Bass-Pro has the two barrel combo on sale until...oops yesterday. Cant go wrong with the 870!

Yeah, I guess you can swap barrels on it....I don't have a shotgun either so that could come in handy.

I have an 870 Express combo, 20" rifled w/ sights, and a 28" vent rib. I'm not keen on Remingtons generally and would prefer the Mossberg 500's safety location, but the 870 is a classic for good reason and as a combo it's great value. Two guns in one is a good thing.

I have a 28" vent barrel, 12g Express for which I later bought a 20" smooth, rifle sighted barrel and I am very happy with it. I've never used it for deer hunting, but I have gotten 3 touching holes with it at 50 mts, firing Remington 1oz-2 3/4" rifled slugs, either magums or Max Dram equivalent. I tried 3" slugs as well as Winchester rifled slugs in both lenghts, but none shot as good as these Rem Mag 1oz rifled slugs. The 3" slugs were a waste of time and money for me, not to mention a little punishing on the shoulder.

Mine has a cantilevered scope mount on a rifled barrel and a 21" turkey barrel. Nice combination. Not sure if I should take both barrels out this autumn...;)

I bought a 12ga 870 Express Deer from S.I.R. recently - It should be noted that the one that they stock is designed for use with buckshot or slugs. It has a 20" barrel, improved cylinder choke, and adjustable open sights. I wasn't expecting much with the laminate stock that it comes with, but I've started to like it - to the point that I can't be bothered changing it. It doesn't come with sling swivels if that's a deal breaker for you.
I'm really happy with mine.
Remington has a 30 dollar mail in rebate on right now, which sweetens the deal a bit.

I love my 870.Would not sell it.Ever! Have a combo 28" bird barrel and a 20" rifled slug barrel with fibre sight's.Had it scoped with a weaver covert a mount. but don't use optics much.lots of brush hunting.Mine is a cold shooter.the hotter it gets the more it wanders. but the first two are dead on. Can't speak for the other fellas but mine seems to fancy remington copper solids 3" sabot slugs. That said there are lots of resonably priced shot guns out there. Stoeger makes an excelent pump gun,A good freind has shot many a deer with his mossberg 500.Its a little pricey but savage makes a fully rifled 12 gauge version of the model 12 bolt action rifle called the slug warrior. It's nice but a little too specialized for my needs.and or buget.Happy hunting!

With all the problems that the Rem 870's have been having lately, I'd steer clear (do a quick search, and you'll be overwhelmed with ejection issues, poor metal, and premature wear). I second the mossberg 500 vote.

Oh. I've had no such problems, but mine's several years old. It is an inherently good design, but anything can be f#*ked up by poor quality control.

I've got the rifled 870 express mag - I love it! Took a deer with it last year and was impressed by its accuracy. I would go with a slug barrel and smooth barrel, as shot won't work worth a darn out of a rifled barrel, but I find the rifle barrel quite a bit better than a smooth for slugs.

Thanks for the feedback everyone...I'm still undecided. Sounds like it's a good entry level slug gun but based on some of the responses (incl. that Remington QC thread) I'm tempted to hold off or spend more cash on something else.

for the last two years, a group of six of us have filled our tags using Remington 870. most (about 80%) of the harvest was from a Remington 870 (we filled our tags by midweek!). Remainder are Winchester 1300. I have no problems, but i do use 2.75" shells, and avoid the 3". They can jam on ejection.

buy a mossberg 500 for around the same price, and throw on a rifled choke tube. Those rifled slugs wont know the difference.

"...think you can swap barrels on it..." You sure can. An 870 is an 870.
"...what length of barrel..." Most slug barrels are 20". Some are rifled, some are not. 20" is a handy length.
