I have a Rem 870 pump and when I am shooting the magazine cap gets loose then the barrel starts to move. Taking a closer look at it the Remington barrel that came with the gun I see it does not have the detent ball that I was used to in my old gun. Is anyone familiar with this issue?

The older 870s and newer 870s have a different detent system. Is it possible someone's replaced the cap with the wrong version for the gun? You should be able to feel it ratchet when you tighten it down. If it doesn't, something's amiss.

Sounds like an Express Barrel. I have the same issue, I have mag cap that has a built in sling swivel. I use the sling all the time. I just check it after every 5th shot or so, and if it ever falls off the sling will keep me from loosing it.

Adding a thin, wavy washer will help
Thanks GeoTrekr. I got it. The magazine cap retainer piece was pushed down into the tube far enough that it didn't mesh with the teeth on the cap. I gave it a push with my finger and it popped up to where the magazine cap teeth will grab it now.

I have own 870's for a long time, what I use is a small pipe wrench and tighten down the cap a little more than hand tight, but not to much.
