I bought a 870 combo this spring and am interested in building it into a tactical shotgun.
I'm thinking a mag extension from remington is first on my list.
The barrel will also be swapped for a shorter one. Perhaps 18.5"? I'm thinking my 23" 'turkey barrel' will do for now.
The thing I'm curious about is where to get a pistol grip/6 position extendable but stock, and a fore grip that is essentially a tube with 3 rails on it at 90* intervals. I'm thinking a Mag light on the left,laser on the right and a vertical grip on the bottom rail.
Any ideas?

a light is a good thing to have on a 'tactical' shotgun (provided that its removable),
but i find a foregrip and a laser to be pretty useless. personally, i believe the money would be better spent getting a 12.5-18.5" barrel tapped for chokes, and on ammo for practice.

i highly recommend that you find some local CGNers that have some tactical shotguns and ask if theyll meet up with you at your local range. itll give you a chance to try different configs and see for yourself what works, and what doesnt - before you spend a lot of money on potentially useless items.

i also recommend watching Magpul's Art of the Dynamic Shotgun - they go over various builds, practical upgrades and their usefulness.

Good advice. I will check out that web page. I do want a practical gun too. I've seen some pretty RADICAL mods. I was thinking of my mods to be both TACTICOOL and functional.
The mag extension I was thinking about could very easily hold a bipod when my cammo tacticool is wearing her turkey barrel. Over size safety for glove wearing in the bush/field. 6 position stock makes a cool factor out of stock adjustment that a regular shim kit/ adjustable cheek rest in a sporting configuration just doesn't do. The fact that I can strip her down for the zombie apocalypse is a mute bonus point. ;)
Think a rage finder would mount to a rail? Maybe on the mag cap not the fore stock?
I haven't met anyone yet but have been viewing pictorial displays here thinking about practicality of my applications and their chosen options.
Fore instance;
I've seen BOX mag adoptions for an 870! Cool but practical for me? No.
Bayonet lug, No.
Heat shield....maybe, if they stay cool enough to affix cammo to. That could work.
Defiantly would be nice to evaluate some hands on stuff too.

Here's my (obviously biased) opinion on "Tactical/combat" shotguns - simpler is better.

- 14-18" barrel, Cyl bore is OK, Imp Cyl or Mod is better. Tightens up patterns with buck and Mod is probably the best for shooting slugs aside from a fully rifled barrel:
- Vang Comp 1-shot mag extension - the most reliable and solid mag extension on the market, bar none;
- Vang Comp Dome safety - try it and you'll never use anything else again...
- a front sight you can see - I'm a huge fan of the XS Big Dot. With a little practice you can place slugs very accurately with this sight;
- some sort of sling;
- a light if it suits your fancy;
- a side saddle if that's your thing - I prefer a shoulder bag of some sort (Olongapo Outfitters Shotgun Grab and Go) or the SOE Shotgun Micro Rig;

If it's just a range/game gun - go crazy...

Look up #### Proenneke's 14" 870, a very nice build...but do to it what suits you best.

- Rem 870P w/ 14" police barrel - Price is whatever you can find one for. The 14" 870P is fairly rare these days. Wolverine is your best place to look, or order.
- Hogue short LOP stock and standard fore end.
- Vang Comp System Full Vang Comp System, includes back boring barrel, long forcing
cone and ports $255.00
- VCS - Stainless Steel Magazine Follower $22.00
- VCS - Oversize Safety $15.00
- Vang Comp Systems - Front Sight - Tritium (silver solder on) $140.00
- Vang Comp Systems - Rear Sight with integral Picatinny Rail $195.00
- Installation (drill & tap rear, install front) $75.00
- Mesa Tactical Aluminum 6 shot for Remington 870/1100/1187 $65.00

Vang Comping the barrel is well worth the price, I've had it done to my 590 at TacOrd and it works great, improves the shot pattern and reduces the recoil a bit, but it does make it louder.

zahal.org has alot of the stuff you are looking for and more, and they offer free shipping on most items. What ever flashlight you pick for your gun make sure it is quality, Surefire, Fenix or similar. The recoil of the shotgun, especially with slugs will breake most cheap lights, I broke 3, than I bought a Fenix TK11 and haven't had any problems since.

If you want a laser I would advise against it, a red dot sight like a Aimpoint or EOTech is much better for target acquisition. Ghost ring sights are good too, and there is nothing wrong with just the bead.

What ever you do, practice, pracrice, practice, thats the best accessory for any gun,

^nice gun, but not the way i would spend well over $2000 - nor the way a new shooter should.

this is a pretty good deal on an 870P from a good guy - id buy it myself if i had the money. looks like theres around $600 in upgrades in it:
