What are some general opinions on the early rem 700 actions? Were the 1963 versions up to the same quality as later versions? Since they were introduced in 1963, were there any inherent flaws that were remedied?

Happy shooting!

Early ones will have a loading cutout running back into the rear bridge, a two piece sear/safety, shorter bolt plug, and no guide rib. Bolt handle styles have changed over the years. Basically the addition of the guide rib is the biggest change. No difference in quality, or inherent flaws.

Yup! ... and no one has mass produced another bolt action as strong, as safe and as accurate in almost 50 years of production.

721/722 were introduced nearly 60 years ago. The 700 is the more modern version, introduced 46 years ago, almost 50 years in production. I could look it up in Otteson's book, but it doesn't really matter if it is '62 or '63.
One consideration with respect to older 700s and 721/722s is that they do not use the same extractor as the current 700s.

Sorry I had ta.

I have a 1975 BDL, and it still has the peep sight holes drilled into it. when did they stop putting the peep holes on the M700's? (Mine is SN 682---- Nov 1975 assembly)
