I went off to the range Last Sunday to try a few different slugs for the opener the next day. I have a Mossburg 500A with a smoothbore slug tube, the old Win rifled slugs were the ####'s but the Rem Buckhammers were the goods. I know that it can be touch and go with a smoothbore tube but these things were on the money. I went out for an afternoon hunt on monday and was in the tree for 1/2 an hour and a good size buckfawn strolled by and I waited until he was ten steps(not yards from the tree) and put one down betwween the shoulders and demo'ed the spine and took out the heart and half the lungs. I thought I was going to get hit with the blood spray. I know that it was super close but pretty impressive. First deer with a slug gun.

for the likes of you, we'll have to wear safety goggles from now on....
now you have to clean the shotgun.... next tim just pitch.... :runaway:

kidding aside, good job. I like close encounters too.
any pictures to share with us?
 
I tested those Buckhammers in my Ithaca smoothbore and they stabalized just fine. Not bad for a slug made for rifled barrels/rifled choke tubes.
Actually shot about a four inch group at 100 yards... not as good as the Brennekes but not too bad.

Congrats on your deer... I hope you washed down the tree stand.:)
 
I have heard that the Brennekes were near the top for smoothbore's, I will get some and do some tests for next season. Next Season will be a few days with the rifle and a few with the sluggun, I would love to get another with the shotgun.

They shot the best out of my new mossy 535, and believe me I tried em all. $140 worth of slugs in one day! 2 3/4 buckhammers grouped the best.

Was at 50 yds, my very last shot @ 100yds was about 1" high and about 2" left of ctr, but I didn't get the paper to show off.

I am happy as my furthest shot in Dec will be about 60yds.

Yup rifled, with 1.5-3 scope, pretty happy with the set-up.
