Hello guy,s.My son wants to buy a new semi auto .22, he,s looking at either the stainless/synthetic Rem 597 or the stainless/synthetic Marlin 60 and would like you guy,s opinion on which to buy.(By the way he does not want a 10/22) and what one is more accurate and more reliable. Thanks for all opinions

There alot of up and down reviews on the Rem 597. Some guys love them. Some guys the opposite. I have never owned or shot one so I have no oppinion on them. Other than they look nice and feel nice to sholder compared to alot of other 22s. I think Remington has made some good changes with the magazines and such lately.
I have shot a model 60 and I really enjoyed it. I didn't have any jams or anything and it was a pretty accurate little rifle.
Hopefully someone on here knows more to help you out better than I can.
Speaking for the Marlin only its a nice gun for a good price.
If I may ask why doesn't he want a Ruger 10/22???

The model 60 would be my pick. I've shot both and found the 60 to be a beautiful rifle with it's only downside being a heavy trigger. I especially like their laminate stainless version.

The 597 I've used was a pos. Not very reliable and very ammo sensitive. I've heard they have improved quite a bit in the last few years but I'd still stick with the 60.

I've not owned either personally, but I have worked on ones belonging to customers. Based on that experience, I'd go with the Marlin.

Well the reason Brad doesn,t want a Ruger10/22 is he feels it is to small ,also his cousin has one and he wants a different rifle for their "HIGH STAKES" shooting contests(loser buy,s the pizza)

Nothing wrong with wanting something different.
If he is shooting for pizza with his buddy I would buy the Marlin for sure.
More accuracy for that winning group or pop can kill LOL:)

Good luck

SIR Mail Order.
169.99 Marlin 60 With Scope.
You won't beat that price anywhere I don't think..

Looks like you made the boys decision CRAZY-TRAIN ,got on the S.I.R site and we ordered a Marlin 60.Ended up ordering the basic model with the scope. Can,t beat the price $169.99(hope it gets delivered soon the lad has no patients). The stock looks a little on the thick side so we might have to do a bit of sanding also does anyone know of a speedloader for the Marlin tube seems to me I heard of something like that years ago..Thanks for everyones input I will let everyone know how the Marlin compares to the Ruger in accuracy.

A Marlin 60 was my first rifle.

My wife shot a full tube (14 rounds) yesterday at 25 yds into a 1" hole, no flyers (CCI Blazer ammo), and she has only shot a few times.

I've gotten a 5 shot 1" single hole at 50 yds. Most times you will get 3 shots touching..and 2 very close. Mine is reliable and a joy to shoot. I'm very attached to it.

Will be using it for hunting first time this fall (rabbits, grouse, partridge). Can't wait to see how it works in the field.

I was INITIALLY very disappointed with my 597...jammed a lot and not accurate. However, I found one type of ammo that is extremely accurate, and I purchased a newer magazine (floorplate of mag is thicker?) that did away with the jamming.

Happy now.

Good choice on the Marlin:cool:
I had a 597........dissapointing to say the least.
The Clip was crap...it would never feed an entire clip full...ever, and belivee me I tried every brand of ammo made:rolleyes:

The barrel was installed crooked....

The scope mount was also drilled and tapped offcentre...
Not too mention two of the mounting holes in the reciever were stripped out of the box:redface:

After running out of windage adjustment at 50 yards:redface: I gave up and gave it to a Friend for shooting Pigs on the Farm with.....it was good certainly good enough for a single shot at 6"s;)
I wouldn't buy another 597 if it was Free.
Some Folks like em but not Me.

crazy_train04 or anyone else in the know for that matter.
Is SIR a reputable place to order online? Anyone had any probs with them? I'm still waiting on my PAL and trying to make a decision on my first rifle but the price for that Marlin 60 with scope has me thinking I could just order one of those and get something very soon after...

I ordered a Benelli Super-Nova From SIR a few months back. I got it in 6 days and I live in Southern Ont. I called in my order. I would rather call then order online myself.

My Friend has a 597 and I think I've learned a few new swear words since he's owned it. VERY VERY ammo sensitive. Even if you get ammo it "likes" you still get jams every mag or two. Your son may want to look at the 795 which is the Marlin 60 with a single stack removable 10 round mag instead. I have one and have gone bricks without a jam. It's the more reliable than the 10/22 or the 597 that I've seen.

Here is the stainless version:

It also has a last shot bolt open feature and a mag safety to keep the kids safe.
