I will be getting a sportsman 48 12g in the next couple weeks from a family member.
it will not eject shells. he was told by an unknown source it has a broken ejector.
by doing some reading people have this problem with light loads. he has shot slugs from it for a few years with this problem starting last fall.
I also read to clean up the recoil spring in the butt stock. as this gun cycles by recoil and not gasses.

does anyone have any experience with this gun or have any other ideas? parts are scarce from what I read and I would like to try everything before finding and buying parts if available.
any help and experience you guys have, would be greatly appreciated
thanks everyone!

Clean the action spring and tube in the butt stock. Polish the chamber. A lot of gunk and wax from old shells (that is an older gun) builds up in the chamber. Shells stick upon firing and cannot be extracted properly to effect proper ejection. Sportsman 48 is recoil operated but should have the flat coil spring with collar on the end. This set up works only one way. It is designed to shoot light and heavy loads with the one setting. Mostly above and a detail strip and cleaning should have it running well. These old 48's and 1148's are simple and keep on running.
