Hello,

I picked this Rem700 SPS Tac up just over a year ago on the EE. It was listed as a .308 and I didn't have a chance to shoot it too much over the past year. Recently I decided to take it out for a range shoot, and noticed I couldn't load more than 1 round in the internal mag; previously only loading it bolt fed.

Wondering if anyone can help clear this up for me, or point me in the right direction of what to do. It wouldn't load .308 into the mag, even though the action and the barrel are listed as .308 (Contacted Remington to confirm)

Attached are photos of what a .308 looks like in the mag. Is this a .223 mag sleeve? Am I doing something wrong where I can't load .308 into the mag? My hypothesis is that someone at some point had a aftermarket mag on here, and put a .223 mag sleeve in when switching it back to "factory" instead of a .308.

It may have been partially converted from a .223. It is the wrong box and follower for a .308.

What is the bolt face like? Is it the original 700 extractor style or has it been ruined by the partial installation of a Sako extractor system?

Your hypothesis is correct, it is 223 magazine box installed in your 308. Remington 700 parts diagrams normally do not show it, google Remington 700 223 box max for a pic. Replace it with a short action mag box and it will be good to go.

Bolt face is made for .308. Thought about grinding off the tab at the back of the sheet metal mag, but the follower would be too small then too.

Contacted seller- no recollection of any issue...

With the number of detachable magazine conversions being done, an EE want ad should bear fruit.

Incidentally, there are two heights of magazine boxes - ADL uses the taller box.

OP,
Once you have the Bbl'd receiver out of the stock & prior to installing the correct mag box & follower.

With Bbl'd receiver up side down
Look in the aft end of the load/ejection port at the rear bridge to see if a 1/2 football shaped scallop was cut in the forward outside bridge of the ejection port.

700SA .378" bolt face receivers do NOT have the scallop.
700SA .473" & .532" bolt face receivers have the scallop for brass ejection clearance as NOT to fall back into the receiver/follower.....backwards.

A few have been assembled improperly that I've witnessed over the years.
