Don't know about elk antler, but deer antler is porous as hell in the middle. Too porous to take a screw or drill a hole(had visions of making some buttons). It'd glue though. Cutting lengthwise would work. No polishing required either. A wee bit of elk antler would be slick. Especially if it came from an elk he shot. Another thought would be a piece of elk bone from an elk he shot. Boil it to remove any organic matter and treat it like antler. Then seal it.
Lee Valley Tools sells small pieces of assorted exotic woods that'd be dandy for that kind of project. Not outrageously expensive either. Calgary, 7261 11th Street S.E. (403) 253-2066. Edmonton, 18403 104th Avenue N.W. (780) 444-6153.
A hunk of brass(it'd be a bit heavy though) can be had from the Metal Supermarket shops cut to whatever size you want. They might just give you a piece too. The guys here in London are extremely friendly.
