"There will always be a place for the well trained horse in modern warfare"
Douglas Haig in the 1920's
My favourite story about that.
Prior to WW1 the command of the machine gun detachnment was always given to the most junior officer in a cavalry detachment. On manuevers, one subaltren actualy took his job seriously and posted his section properly. On the troop appearing on the field, he opened fire (with blanks) and informed the colonel that he had wiped out the entire troop.
On hearing this, the colonel replied "Sir if you cannot act as a proper cavalry officer, you may WALK back to the barracks."
