Dennis Hughes passed away this morning at the age of 69. Before I was born, he competed in the B.C. 1000 yard shoot, and won the offhand segment. (This was 1991. Sorry to the guys I said 1992 to. I was a little distraught.)
The story as he told it, is that a friend of his had taken him down to the area from the Okanogan and was egging him on to join the competition for some good fun. Dennis hadn't fired a gun for almost twenty-six years, but he was harrassed enough by the other shooters to join in. He entered the competition, fully expecting that he would be outgunned by other seasoned shooters.
By the end of the day, he had fired three shots into 7.5" at a grand without a support and took the trophy home. Quite a few competitors kicked themselves for encouraging him to 'try it out'.
I just wanted you guys to hear this, and whether you care or not, he was a great shooter in his lifetime.
