Thought i would start thread if anyone was interested in my results. I've had an 11-87 Premier for many years now that didnt see much action and basically collected dust, this year at our local range i have competed in weekly shoots, 3gun, and misc fun matches, which i normally shot a Mossberg 500 tactical, so i decided to cut the barrel down to 21", after lots of reseach on the web the general consensus was the the 2 gas ports would likely need to be drilled out to cycle light loads with a shortened barrel which were never an issue with the factory 28" barrel. The gun cylcled 100% with Challenger 1 1/8 #8 shot and the hulls were ejected with some distance. Pretty happy with the results as no further mods were needed. I have also added an S&J +2 extension and a fiber optic front sight, just need to order a Daves Metal Works ezloader and it should be a decent set up.

You should post a photo Shane, My 1100 clone is the same as an 11-87 and had nothing but issues this year which Iam sure you remember seeing, Turns out the entire issue was my hand guard, the action rail was binding in it. wish I would have figured it out before I replaced all the internals with real Remington ones.

Glad to hear yours is working, hopefully we can keep up with all the guys running versamax's next year.

I cut it. I would like to take it back one more rib as long as its still over 18.5", now that it cycles reliably at 21" im hoping for the same results at 18.5"+ and will prob look a little cleaner. I am also running 2 o-rings instead of one so that might be helping out a bit.

I think you should be fine to take it back another rib and still meet 18.5", Mine with the +2 meets the end of the barrel which is 18.5, Still only holds 5 - 3" shells too. The cougar has 2 fairly large gas port holes and it cycles the action really nice as long as my forend isn't messing with me, So I think your should do just fine. just took a photo too.

I ordered a factory Remington competition master carrier assembly instead from LGS and installed on my daughter's 1187 and modified the stock carrier assembly on mine by notching out lifter and lengthening button to be similar to the competition master both work good. Her barrel is cut to 18 5/8" and cycles light loads 100% without any gas port modifications.

A buddy gave me a spare factory release button so I modified both silver buttons....kind of inserted one on to the other to get double the length and epoxied them to to look like one button, works good and very solid
