What do folks think of the SPS version of this gun? I am not talking about the recent Sportsman incarnation. Please let me know your thoughts, I found one that fits great and would make an excellent all-arounder. Cheers,

I think they are a great shotguns. I've had several over the years, and have had no issues. Nothing fits me like the 1100 or 11-87. One caution, I have heard that the 3.5" supermag version had a lot of issues, so it wouldn't be a shotgun that I would purchase. The 1100's and the 3 inch version 11-87s, are good. I currently have a SPS 1187. Keep up with regular maintenance and they won't fail you.
I have the 3.5" 1187 special purpose, no complaints at all. Cycles everything from light loads to the heavy stuff. My old rem 1100 wouldn't cycle anything lighter than 1 3/8 oz loads and jammed with remington shells everytime.
It's good to hear that your SPS supermag is working just fine. Of course I have had no experience with them, but when you read a number of posts from many different forums, and a number of them are negative, it makes you think twice about buying one, or recommending one to others.
I guess you take your chances when one buys any mass produced firearm. Speaking of which, the 1100 you had was a lemon, cause I own a number of them, and they have always functioned flawlessly. If you have a magnum receiver, and a 3" barrel installed it won't eject light loads because they are for the most part waterfowl guns, not upland game guns. However, that your shotgun would not eject anything less than 1 3/8 oz, or that it jammed with Remington shells leads me to believe that you had a malfunctioning 1100. All of my magnums will consistently shoot 1 1/4 oz and heavy 1 1/8 oz loads.
Of course this thread is not about 1100s, but 1187s, so I will reinterate, all of the 1187s I have owned have worked flawlessly, ejecting everything from light 1 1/8 oz loads to 3" magnum loads, both steel and lead. Again, I can't speak for the 3.5" or any of the newer sportsman models.
