I have an original 1858 Remington New Army revolver that the barrel is pretty well smooth on - anyone know for sure whether an Uberti replacement barrel will fit?

I use Uberti cylinders and they fit fine so long as you also use an Uberti cylinder pin (they are just a few thousandths smaller).

Thanks for any info!

Maybe. A run of repro replacement barrels were done in @1970 which may still be available if you look hard enough...

Were they marked BP Only or they were done to resemble original 100%?
Can you tell them apart is actually my question, and would you know more about it?

Pietta barrels do!

In response to my own question:

Dunno - yet...

I ordered one from Dixie Gun Works on speculation, their catalog just lists it as a barrel for an original Remington. However, it is a Pietta barrel.

It is marked .44 Black Powder Only, has a 6 digit serial number on the bottom (where the original one would be) and also Pietta made in Italy on the right side. Also ordered a loading lever screw and it fits perfectly too.

The loading lever catch (on mine at least) had to be re-soldered as it was tipped towards the muzzle slightly and didnt allow the catch to hold properly.

However, it's all good now. :)

Hope this helps others wondering the same thing.

I have heard they do fit in the orignal guns but let us know when you get it in.
The threads pithch are very fine on and orignal remington barrel like 30 to 1

Well, here is the scoop:

The Uberti barrel has the same thread pitch and will fit the original 1858 frame. However, the loading lever catch is about 1/4" closer to the front of the barrel, and will not work with the original loading lever (perhaps a repro from Uberti is a little longer and would). The issue is also that the loading lever catch is dovetailed into the barrel, not silver soldered like the original and Pietta barrels, so not possible to move without making it obvious.

Hopefully this info will help out a fellow 1858 restorer in the future.

As a side note, both Uberti and Pietta cylinders work in the original model 1858 44 caliber.

Interesting thread...a question about the fit of the replacement barrel. When you thread it into the frame and snug it up does the front sight line up properly ie: is it top dead centre?
