looking at getting a 1911 and stumbled on to the Remington 1911 R1 Stainless model and I have to say, its a nice looking piece and priced really well. Anyone here ever use or own one, and did you like it? Almost all of the reviews seem good that I have read on line, but no real way of asking or knowing if they are legit reviews or not???

Thanks.

I have the R1 Enhanced. My first and only 1911 I ever owned - Hard to get a 100 year old design wrong but mine as well as others I have seen have issues with finish. Right front of slide is beginning to show wear marks due to poorly machined frame. For the money? I have nothing else to compare to. It shoots as accurate as I am. I reload my own ammo but I have had a few fail to feed and fail to ejects and just recently a couple of failed ejects that sheared 2 cases.

I suppose I could just debur the frame but I wonder why I should have to myself. I am gonna see if I can get it done under warranty.

I know it wasn't the best 1911 I could have picked, but I thought it was good value. Now I wish I got a Sig instead. I expected more from Remington especially since they used make them for the war.

I have the R1 stainless, I think it's a good pistol for what it is, but caters to a very specific, niche market. It's a good, American made, entry-level, mostly traditional 1911. For me, I just had to buy American, I wasn't looking to spend a lot of money (sub $800 before taxes), and I didn't have the patience to wait for the Ruger; which really left me with only one choice. Many others have been well served by their less expensive, offshore produced 1911s and I won't disagree, but as I said, I just couldn't compromise American manufacturing for my first 1911.

As for the pistol itself, the finish on the stainless is pretty decent save for some rough areas on the trigger guard and the very visible grains of the steel on top of the slide. The remaining opinions are based on my limited experiences with 1911s and shooting in general so what I may enjoy about it, may seem "substandard" to a 1911 connoisseur. The slide-to-frame fit started a tad loose and would rattle when shook with the hammer back. Oddly enough, the rattles seem to have disappeared, the opposite of what I expected to happen over time, with use. However, the barrel bushing is a tight, solid fit, I haven't been able to disassemble the pistol without the bushing wrench. The trigger is a tad sloppy during take up, but the break feels crisp enough, at least by my inexperienced standards. The GI style safety sort of hurts to ride during a long range session; though I'm just hoping the side of my thumb callouses over time. The beaver tail offers adequate protection for the webbing between my thumb and index, I've yet to be bitten by the hammer. As for reliability, I've only fed you pistol 230 grain FMJs and it has performed almost flawlessly so far, save for the instances when I load 7+1 on my last mag to finish a box. It tends to double feed when I load +1.

All-in-all I'm happy with what I bought, I think she's a keeper.

I too wanted my 1911 to be American made.

As for the barrel bushing I thought it was an odd tight fit. It seems the Remington barrel is a taper fit to the bushing. If you push slide back a slight bit the bushing turns very easily without the tool.

I thought it was ridiculous at first using the tool because the spring cap was shaving plastic off the tool.

Well I just pulled the trigger with this one from Epps. Probably be here within a week but likely wont get to shoot it for a couple more months :(

I have the standard R1 I bought to resemble my Remington Rand and love it. It is a great shooter. I have 500 rounds thru it with no malfunctions.

Awesome gun!!! I've had mine for a couple of months and love it. I just wish a held out for a SS model.

I tried one, didnt shoot any better than a norinco. trigger was just as bad

Maybe, but the Remington does not have the ugly '' Made in China'' on it ! :p

Just took a brand new R1 (regular GI version) with two set of grips and seven magazine on a trade. I am expecting it tomorow and just cant wait to get it ! :D

I'm leaning towards the Remington R1 stainless myself. I was waiting for the Ruger, but I didn't like having to wait for so long and then expect to just buy it whenever it shows up whereas the R1 is readily available.

Speaking of which, is there anywhere other than Epps that carries it?

Have just received mine today, and altough I have not shot it yet, I have the strong feeling that I am gonna love this gun. Well built, nice finish all nice & solid (no wobbling ) all I can say is REALLY NICE !!:D:

It also as a blued (not stainless) barrel bushing which I prefer the look by far as it match the rest of the pistol.

Hey, I have the same gun! :D

Aside from the Colt lineup and some Springfields, the Remington R1 is the nicest looking 1911 on the market.

But my gripes with it:
-Series 80!!! Firing pin safety = lame
-Cast frame. I am curious of the quality of the steel in the Remington. Yes I know guns like Ruger and Caspian make good castings, but this ain't no Caspian.

I disagree, I almost bought the R1, then thought I'd wait for the SR1911 because that I find ###ier with the extra 'features'... I get to pick it up tomorrow.

Series 70
Still a cast frame but it is a Ruger...
plus all the skeletonized goodies and beavertail

Remington r1 vs Ruger sr1911

January handloader magazine said

The R1 produced better grouping then the SR1911 by almost a half an inch. They tested with various ammo weights and style, and averaged the group results. They tested @25 yards, again clamped in a Ransom Rest to rule out any human factor.

They compaired the R1 / SR1911 results to there testing of 3 Springfields - the GI1911A1, Loaded 1911A1, Trophy Match, and the S&W 1911 - the R1 outgrouped them all!

They also field stripped the weapons, after testing - both pistols did not show any excessive wear, and frame slide fit was rated exceptional.

Seems to be the Remington is a better buy the then SR1911. They stated the R1 is on par with many custom guns.
