I would like to purchase a Remington 270 Win model 700 BDL, but I don`t know much about these guns. I have been told that they can drop a deer easily. I would like to use it to go deer hunting as well as drop a few coyotes. Pease comment on this. Should I get a different gun or caliber?

Gun is excellent (Bear in mind a Reminton 700 is a Remington 700... every action is the same except for length and finish... don't think more expensive is better!), the caliber is ...ok.

The 270 is a big, long 30-06 necked down to 6.8mm with a smaller bullet. They burn lots of powder and they are hard on barrels.

For a deer/yote cartridge, I would suggest either a 243 or even a 260 but don't be planning on doing anything with the hides.

I killed 2 deer, 5 bear, and one moose with the exact same rifle and caliber at ranges from 40 to 275 yards. none went farther then 40yrds and none needed a second shot.

excellent all around hunting rifle.

now where is the little smilie waving the BS flag...

a 270 is the same size case as a .30-06, (the .30-06 is 0.9mm longer....big & long? huh?), just necked down to .277, it burns roughly the same amount of powder and is quite easy on barrels. I've loaded for for 270's over 30yrs old and they are still keeping everything inside an inch.

how hot are you loading yours?

I have a Remington BDL Custom Deluxe in .270 and it is a super accurate rifle ( best 5 shot group 0.594" at 100 m ) that is really well finished and smooth to operate. The .270 is one of the all-time favorite cartridges for hunting ( see many old articles by Jack O'Connor ) and is considered to be flat shooting and sufficiently hard hitting enough to drop any deer sized animal. Outfitted with the correct 130 grain bullet this cartridge should serve you very well.

Well every one has an opinion and I will throw mine in... I am not a fan of the 270.. I can do the came thing with a 6.5X55 or 280 Rem.. I prefer both over the 270..

Unfortunately I can not give a good reason for it.. every one I knew shoots a 270 and they all like it.. I just always felt a 130gr 270 bullet was a poor compromise.

Blygy says that the 6.5x55 does everything that the .270 does and he is quite correct. The 6.5x55 is one of the World's great cartridges ( though arguably the 140/142 g pill most often associated with it would be too much for the application the original poster suggested ) but I don't think Remy makes a BDL chambered for it. Ammo availability is also spotty when compared to the .270 that is sold everywhere. I guess the same is true of the .280

The 270 uses the 30-06 case. I never implied it was any longer, I simply spoke to the fact that it is long as opposed to short (actioned).

This is a precison rifle forum, not an hunting forum and within the context of a precision cartridge, it is hard on barrels and one inch don't cut it in the precison world.
