I saw a used remington 700 in 338 lapua today. It had green synthetic stock, Cool looking magazine and bull barrel with muzzle break. The barrel appeared to be a bit short. Maybe 24". I'm not sure what model it was. xcr, mlr or police. Anyway, it had a nice scope on it, and the package seemed like a good deal at $1600. Does this seem like a good price for this rifle used? I am a lefty and it is a right bolt. Can anyone think of why this would be a problem? Does anyone know of any issues with this particular model to steer me away from buying it? Thanks in advance. Search can take hours on here.

It's hard to say if it's a good deal with out knowing the exact model and what the scope is .. How many rounds fired ? Damage ?

If you could find that out . You will get much better advice

MLR/ Police. (Virtually identical afaik)

They are good rifles overall, generally 1-1.5 MOA unless accurized and reloaded for.

Muzzle brakes on the mlr/police versions become a pain if you shoot prone, as they kick up tons of dust and grit right at your eyes, so consider swapping that out.

Lefty with a righty bolt should not be a large issue.

These guns are effective out of the box to 1km and up if you have the shooting skills to match the cartridge and the firearm.

No idea what the scope model is on your particular one, so I have no idea about that without more info, but for the base gun brand new, they seem to go for around $2,000.00 ballpark.

Do not buy a 338 Lapua unless you are a reloader or are rich, factory ammo is about $5/shot and even reloads are close to $2/shot. Depending on powder you use you will go through 85-105gr per cartridge so a pound of powder will only last 70-100 shots. Powder is hard to find lately.
I used to own a 700P in 338 Lapua and within a year I sold it and upgraded to my Desert Tactical SRS.
The Remington is a good entry level rifle but I think you would be better off with a Savage long range hunter or FCP, I've heard great reports on the accuracy of them in factory trim.
338 Lapua is not a cartridge to take on if you are on any kind of budget or if you don't have access to somewhere to safely shoot beyond 500yds, I do load development at 200yds and won't even bother wasting ammo at less than that.
Unless you really want a 338 I would suggest a 300 mag or something like that which is still capable of easily shooting 1000yds but costs a lot less each time you pull the trigger.

Also need to know what type of scope is on that package, anything less than a $1000 scope on a rifle like this is a waste as you won't be able to stretch it out past 500yds with a cheap scope.

I agree

I have a 308 Win and a 300WinMag and have a lot of fun for up to 1 000 yards.

To go at much higher distance I have the .50BMG.

the 338 LM is an excellent caliber but it stands between the 300WM and the .50BMG. Also reloading is paramount for 338 LM and .50BMG

I would not consider this right hand rifle for a left hand shooter.

If you have a case failure (not common - but) there is no protection of your face from gas and the extractor being blown into it. The extractor system on the Lapaua 700 is no where as safe as the original 700 extractor system enclosed in the 3 rings of steel.

Can you give a specific examples of where this has been the situation or are you going to continue sharing your opinion based purely on theory and anecdotal evidence?

What do you have to offer?

Do you think there is protection of your face from gas and the extractor in this model ... if you are shooting a right hand action left handed? There have been injuries and one death I know of with left handed shooters with right handed rifles that had a catastrophic case failure in Centerfire Benchrest Shooting in the US. (Extractor pieces through the eye into the brain)

Start a thread about it... I was answering the OP.
