Thinking about poking around for black bear this year and will probably drag along my 45-70, at least some of the time. I have a fair amount of Remington 405 JSP bullets to reload with, and was wondering who has used these on deer or bear or dinosaur? How would you rate the performance? What velocity would you say is best for good expansion (either muzzle or impact). I have a fair assortment of powders, so not looking for a specific load, just a velocity range. Googling has lead me to believe they're the best and worst bullet, grenade at anything over 1,300 fps or hold together at 1,900 fps, and so on.:d What say you.

I've shot dear with them at about 1950fps in 450 marlin. Made pretty spectacular kills. But anything middle of the road from 1500-1750 will easily get the job done.

Between 1200 and 2100 you are golden... they will cleanly finish any black bear walking... your job is to place the bullet.

A 405gr JSP Remington (next to a 350gr RN Hornady) recovered from a Bull Moose. Raking shot, hit shoulder bone at about 1600 fps. Broke bone and lodged in the neck. Total penetration was < 18". 1 shot DRT but too thin of a jacket and insufficient penetration for my liking. Use at your own peril.

A 400gr hard cast type bullet would have shot clear through.

Looks good and sounds good... as I said, perfect for the boiler room on a bear.

Thanks for the information guys. Sounds like the bullet is quite flexible velocity wise. I had developed a decent load with a faster powder (running around 1,450 fps) but thought I might be selling myself short using a jacketed bullet at that speed. I'll turn up the heat a bit and see if I can keep it accurate.
