Okay, I have a buddy that has 5 or 6 22's and he needs a little extra cash so he's selling me his viper for 50 bucks. I have never seen a viper before but I know he takes good care of all his rifles and he told me it would be great for my young ladd. I told him he had a deal because $50.00 is not going to break the bank and I know the gun is in good condition.

My question is that I have heard mixed reviews on this gun and I am wondering what you people have to say about it?

Would you also say that it is a light gun for kids to shoot (under close parental supervision of course)?
It will be used for plinking, rabbits and squirrels.

By the way , my son is 7 and will only be shooting at paper animals for now.

I know that the 10/22 is the go to semi for most people but I think for $50.00 bucks, I can't go wrong.

I have a 522,and while I certainly don't think that it's the best semi-auto rimfire Remington ever made.I've had no problems with it.It feeds reliably, and accuracy is tolerable. For $50 you can't go wrong, however I strongly reccomend that you start your kids off with a single shot .22,and then progress to the semi-auto. I hear what your saying MUR about the single shot. I myself started off with a Cooey sing shot 12 guage and an old cooey bolt action 22 (not a single shot but slow to work the action when you 8 or 9).

I have also preached to the young fella that the way to start shooting is to use a single shot (Make the first one count, it makes a better shooter).

I just couldn't pass up this deal and your post made me think that I might keep it in the locker for a few years or take it out for me and the wife to use for plinking.

I just find the old cooeys that I have a a bit heavy and bulky and wanted something lighter for the young fella and this gun just happened to come up.
