Hi
I have a Remington 525 that I am working on. The mission with it is to learn a bit about guns and the action parts. The rifle was in pretty rough shape when I acquired it. It is not worth much as a rifle so if I cannot fix it, not a big deal but I hope to learn a bit along the way. I had to buy a bolt for it (from a member here) but otherwise, not much invested in it.
When I put the bolt in, it loaded ok but I had a very hard time getting it out. It withdrew about a 1/2" and stopped solid. I had to keep taking pins and parts out but then it suddenly came free. I decided to keep disassembling.
Here is the parts diagram for reference.

I had to tap (very firmly, brass pin) on the #39, receiver insert, to get it out. Once I had everything cleaned up, I could not get it back in. I marked it with marker to see where it was rubbing and filed on those areas, if they looked high. There are a couple of "welds" on the side. I don't see them as holding anything in place. Could they be there to act as an adjustable shim? File it till the receiver insert slides in without lateral play? I eventually got it back in but had to tap it "gently" to get it into place, and tried the bolt again. It did the same thing, could not be retracted. I see now that it is being caught on the #12, Ejector. If you look at the enlarged view of it, there is a radiused corner but in my rifle, this radius is at the back. The bolt is getting hung up on the front. Would anyone know which way this ejector is supposed to be installed? The parts diagram does not show much detail. Again, the rifle is rough and I have no history on it so someone might have disassembled it in the past, or drove over it, or...
I also noticed that the receiver insert is wider at the back than at the front and looks "splayed" out. It measured about .505" at the back but near the front, about .465" and the #34 and #35 Sear and Sear retainer seem sloppy.
Being the first rifle I have disassembled, I don't know what I am looking for or at, other than to learn the terms and parts, etc. If I am lucky, find something obvious.
Any advice or input?
Thanks, Shawn
