Found this one at the gunshow yesterday. From 1969.
Not very many around so I hear. Anyone have one?
Going to try to find some scope mounts and shoot it tonight...

Appears to be tapped on the barrel for Unertyl style bases.
What does the action look like for scope mounting purposes?
Condition looks great.
Keep us posted on the accuracy.
You failed to mention the price.

Found a cheap set of warne rimfire rings that attach to the 3/8" dovetail. Not sure about the quality of these but they'll do for now.
Mounted a big 6-24 B&L on her. Hopefully it prints nice tonight.

Found this on RIMFIRECENTRAL

"The 540X and 540XR have nothing in common with the 40X family of guns.

They are pretty rare as far as Remington rimfire rifles go. If I remember correctly only 11,000 or so 540X & 540XR's were produced total.

But they aren't as sought as after as the 37 and 40X. They just don't bring as much money."

Most of the comments on these rifles were very positive, and they seemed to have a loyal following - if it shoots half as good as it looks it'll be a keeper.

The action for these rifles was akin to that used for the centerfire 788. It uses multiple locking lugs at the rear of the bolt. Very effective lockup. Not the smoothest action. The rifle should shoot very well.

The same as used for the 5mm magnum line of rifles, then? If so, hell for strong. IIRC, there were some posts to the effect that Remington designed those to withstand 60Ksi pressures. Made them pretty popular for centerfire conversion, once the receiver was threaded.

540 Remington

Your a lucky man to find a fine looking 540 Remington they are great shooters have one in 540xr that my son shoots at local benchrest shoots near Ottawa. He often wins beating me with my 40x Rem and many of Anshutz 54s
The 540 perform best with top end ammo, Sk Rifle match is not top ammo !
A good friend of mine found a fellow that has a Rem 540 in a original box never opened, unfired ,now that would be a find. There are 3 Remington 540s at our club all extremely good shooters and often win matches

Here is targets that won shoot in June 2019 with 540 xr at 50 Yards
Good luck with yours.

To show you how tight the competition is check out second place shooter who lost bye x count shooting a fine 54 Anshutz

Nice shooting manitou. Yeah my benchrest ammo supply for a 22 lr is non-existent!
All 540 shooters at club get best performance with Lapua + yes 20.00 per box 50 one likes center x and both shoot well at 100y,SK match will not win any shoot at 100y they work okay at 50 y in some guns

Chalk up another 540xr owner. I have had mine for a lonnnggggg time and its great on gophers when I feel like going single shot. I even remember where I bought it,whom I bought it from and what I paid for it!

So tantalizing, all these fine pieces, and apparently very good shooters. I saw a low round 40X for (I think) an eye watering $2800.00 recently. What would be a fair price for a 540?
Cheers

Nice find. Out of curiosity does this rifle have the two adjustable screws on the bottom of the forend to be able to tune the forend pressure point for best accuracy? I can’t remember if Remington used this but I know some of the older rimfire target rifles had this feature.
