I bought a Rem 552 the older model with the smooth forend ,it usually fires the first round but goes click on the next .I`ve cleaned every thing and the firing pin does not appear to be damaged , what else might cause this problem ?

.
If a .22 RF has been dry fired a lot, the firing pin tends to peen the barrel a bit, resulting in a deeper recess. This can cause misfires.

The other thing is possibly ammunition. Try a different brand, some rims may be thicker than others.

I`ve tried 3 kinds of ammunition withe same result , if it is barrel that peened can that be fixed without replacing the barrel ? I`ve found some of the cases and the firing pin marks vary in depth , would that mean the pin needs replacing even though it looks correct?

I think I`ve found the issue ,the hammer is hitting the lifter bar , I`m thinking of shimming the hammer to one side if I can figure out how to remove the hammer which is held in with a captured pin ,anyone know how to do that?
