thought I would start a thread here. does anyone out there have one that they still shoot? I know the ammo was discontinued for these in the early 80's but is now back in production. I have one that was left to me from my late father's collection and it used to be his favorite gun. it is still a good shooter and I will be resurecting it again soon with a custom stock and new optics. Just wondering how many are out there and are till shooting.

cheers.

Anyone getting any of the new ammo?

As far as I know, the only folks making the stuff are Aquila in Mexico. Not coming into Canada anytime soon, as far as I know, again.

Good rifle to base a really small centerfire off of, only needs a bit of threading and a new front end on the bolt.

I ordered 500 rds of ammo from a supplier in the states. showed up no problem. I think I got lucky with the shipment tho, cause I thought that ammo was not allowed across the border....but it showed up without any hitches...lucky me.

A few months ago I read an article on a guy in the U.S. that was making conversion kits for these rifles. A new front bolthead for the bolt, and special centerfire cases. I think the cost was about $200, but unfortunately I do not remember what magazine it was in.

I think a 597 in 5mm Mag would be more interesting.

Especially considering that .17 HMR is unsafe to use in semi-auto's. It may just have a niche after all.

There are a couple US smiths doing conversions. James Calhoon sells prints and instructions for about $25. Pretty much anyone that sees pictures, has a pretty good chance of success making the conversion, if they are competent enough to make it from the info in the plans. The action needs to be threaded to install the barrel, too.

I read about it on the Saubier Small Caliber forum.
